Where Do I Start?

Recommended Posts

Hello ladies & gents!

I'm considering to have bariatric surgery. Where do I start? Do I go to PCP first? Or should I do to a bariatric surgeon?

My BMI... 41.5 and it has been affecting my blood pressure.

Please help!!

Ask your pcp to refer you. If not search the web fo a seminar.

I started with a seminar at my doctor's office (free). Learned a bunch and then approached my PCP. I thought she would be difficult to convince (she's old school) but she went with it and wrote me a letter of recommendation. Do your research online, talk to people that you may know that have had WLS, ask lots of questions of the doctor and staff. If you're going the insurance route, there may be several requirements before surgery (stuff like doctor supervised weight plans, tests, etc. - you can Google it). Good luck! I was sleeved on Nov. 19 and have never been happier.

I researched the different programs near me and then went to their information session. Most programs should have them. They go over what qualifies one for the surgery, the different kinds of surgeries available, and who is a likely candidate for each one. It was helpful to me when making my decision.

Go to a free seminar of the bariatric surgeon of your choice then let your PCP know. My PCP was more than supportive. If not, then it's time to get a new PCP. If you went to a seminar today, you may get scheduled for surgery within 8 weeks so that is about the lead time to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
