Am I A Candidate For Vsg - Brutal Honest Feedback Needed

Recommended Posts

This was a miracle for me...losing 130 pounds easy...now I can eat whatever and eat a lot more so it is up to me to keep it off. This week was rough. It is a miracle, but the long run is up to you. I would absolutely have this surgery. I was telling my aunt, who needs to have it, that not only do you lose the weight, you lose the self loathing, the depression, the saddness. It was more mental for me than physical. I do not cry anymore over hardly anything. The surgery liberated me from mental anguish. Whatever your reasons you are certain to be a changed person.

Hi, I am a vegetarian too (although I do eat seafood in addition to dairy and eggs). I am pre-op now with surgery 12/11 but my nutritionist has had me cutting back carbs A LOT and upping my Protein. I have been doing okay although I was a big carb eater before. There is a vegetarian board on here that may be helpful for you. It all depends on whether you feel okay with lower carbs and keeping up your Protein. You can do it by protein shakes too.

It looks like your bmi is 35 but with the diabetes and cholesterol, I think you should qualify (and maybe even with just one. I think some insurances will do it with just one.) I would suggest going to a seminar and seeing the surgeon now before losing any more weight so your current bmi on record for them to go by. I saw two different surgeons and they both said they go with the first weight so as I worked on losing some weight, they would still go by the higher one because now I would be just below. Plus, the pre-op testing can take several months so it will give you time to do some research. And you can also tell them you don't want to do it or want to hold off for a while. You will also get a lot of information about the surgery from the seminar which might help you decide. And reading and posting on these boards along the way should help too. Good luck!

Caroline

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
