Hello,

I have a consultation booked next week. A couple of years ago, the doctor found a very small hital hernia. Would this stop me from getting the lap band?

Thank you,

DMiele.:phanvan

Doriana,

I have a hiatal hernia and posted a similar question a while back. From what I've learned on this board, hiatal hernias can be repaired during lapband placement. There are a few LBTers who didn't even know they had hiatal hernias until after they woke up from surgery.

So having a hiatal hernia doesn't necessarily prevent the lapband from being placed, but your surgeon may want to run some tests to be sure.

Just be sure to let him know you've had one diagnosed in the past. Sometimes they miss them and this can cause you more problems as it relates to the band than fixing it.

Thank you so much for your replies..

I feel much better now.

Have a great night.

I concur...I've having Lap on 11/10 and I've spent like 20 hours out here ;-) I've read in several places that people who had hiatal hernias had them repaired at surgery...so hey that looks like a great twofer to me ;-) Good luck and welcome!

I had one but didn't know it. The doctor went out and told my DH he would have to repair it or he couldn't band me. I had both done at the same time.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
