Recommended Posts

...I am down 17.4 lbs, I'm under 300 and my doctor, the nurse and NUT are over the moon about my success. I moved up to puréed for the next 2 weeks. Made broiled haddock as my first dinner. It was so delicious! It's amazing to be able to chew. Very excited.

Here is to many more pounds lost in my very near future...cheers!!

I'm shocked you can eat food that can be chewed. I'm on liquids, strained, or pureed for the next 5 weeks and I'm going insane with Soup this and that!! Every doctor is different with how long you have to maintain liquids, but enjoy... I get full off 4-5 sips... 12 days post op down 12 since surgery and 17 since pre op appt..

I only just got cleared today to start puréed foods for the next two weeks. So I started the day with a shake made with Bariatric Advantage chocolate mix (1 scoop), 4 ounces of egg whites and a tablespoon of sugar free Chocolate pudding. Takes the sliminess out of it and makes it way more palatable. I drink drink drink. For lunch I puréed 2 ounces of Boar's Head low sodium Turkey with 1 tablespoon of low fat Mayonnaise. I only ate about 1.5 ounces before getting full. Then for dinner I made my mother and I broiled haddock topped with puréed garlic, fresh parsley and white wine. It cooked out and made it sweet and savory. Puréed the fish and it was great. Again, plated 2 ounces but could only get in about 1-1.5 ounces. It's going to be trial and error for a bit. I find that if I plate my food with small plates or bowls that I do not feel jilted by the small volume. Gotta take care of the psychology end of it throughout the process. Lol.

What I ate today was all items suggested by my NUT. I will of course play around with the absolute best choices, but given the small volume and therefore less calories, I am going to make sure my food is tastey. Plus I have missed cooking so terribly.

I find that the more saliva I generate prior to swallowing, the better. It goes down easier and (knock on wood) I haven't got anything stuck yet. I've learned with my fluids that I have to pace myself with drinking. And that the gurgling belly is just the Fluid going from the esophagus into the stomach, which the opening is swollen and sensitive so I just need to take it easy.

Congrats on your loss! That is outstanding!!

My NUT and nurse practitioner both want all patients to chew even the puréed foods. There is two reasons for this. One is to really break the food down even more than what the food processor can do. The other is because by taking time to chew, you introduce more saliva to the mixture, which makes it easier for the food to travel from the esophagus to the stomach...all through that swollen and sensitive opening between the two. Also I noticed that I am eating slower than ever in my life, I'm taking the time to listen to my body and I can tell when I am getting full. This set good habits for when I move onto soft foods in 2 weeks.

I was told to purée my food and only use enough Fluid to get the food to be puréed. I have great stocks and I'm not above or incapable of making other low calorie/fat sauces to accomplish this.

Great job on your loss! Keep up the great work.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
