Egd Cancelled? Is This Ok?!

Recommended Posts

I received a call yesterday that they were canceling my EGD because they had so many other patients they were only going to do it for those that were high risk. This has me really worried now and my surgery is in a week. Anyone else have this happen to them? Maybe I'm worried for nothing...

I'm sure it's fine. I never had one. You're still getting an EKG, right?

I only had an EKG. The good news is they didn't consider you high risk to come in for the test!! That's terrific!! If the doc wants it he/she will get it done, otherwise hurrah!!.Take a deep breath and move forward!!! One less thing!!!

My Dr only does the egd if you have heartburn prior to sleeve bc the sleeve can cause heartburn. They want to make sure your esophagus, stomach and duodenum are ok prior to surgery.

But he says you don't need it then go with it. I've had two and they are expensive lol.

Although,on another note, I'm not sure what ekg and egd have to do with each other in this post ;-) ...

They all do an EKG right before surgery. The EGD is something they do to make sure you are a viable candidate for this surgery. There can be many things wrong in the upper digestive tract that would make this surgery inadvisable. Instead of the EGD, they will sometimes do an upper GI or as it is also called, a barium swallow test. All ways to see in your throat, esophagus and stomach.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
