They are good when you are on the puree stage, Beans have some Protein, 1/2 cup refried beans has 5 or 6 g protein, 140 calories and 3 g fat. You can purchase them with no fat and no sugar with 90 calories per 1/2 cup which is Old Elpaso brand fat free refried beans for instance and has 6 g protein per 1/2 cup. They are basically already smooth and ready to add to puree mix recipes or as is. remember you'll not be eating 1/2 cup straight away though and a tablespoon or so will have flavor more so than any protein.

My surgeon has them listed in Stage 3 diet. I'm waiting patiently. I grew up loving refried Beans. I like to heat them up with a little shredded cheese on top then add salsa or Otts dressing and a little sour cream. <sigh> have to wait until 12/17.... :)

We have eggs and refried black Beans two or three times a week. I usually take a can of black beans. Heat a skillet sprayed with a very light coat of grape seed oil, add some onions and bell peppers if I have them and little garlic powder. Saute for a minute and then add the liquid from the refried beans and then add the beans a little bit at a time while mashing with a spatula.

I bought Walmart brand fat free refried Beans. Mmmm I put skim milk motzerella cheese on it n a dab of light sour cream. Supper good and this was when I was on purée stage. Doesn't make me gasy :-)

I use the Old El Paso Fat-Free ones. Once I warm them (1/4c at a time since I'm the only one eating them) I top them with Sargento's Reduced-fat Colby Jack cheese then microwave until cheese begins to melt. After, I stir in either Pace Picante sauce or my own homemade salsa (thank you Jesus for making me Latina and for my Ninja!) and top with a teaspoon to a tablespoon of Fage 0% Greek yogurt- it's higher Protein than sour cream and still gives me that creaminess. Oh and no gas! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
