It depends on a few things, like insurance requirements, etc.

If you lose a bit Before, you will be healthier for surgery and lower the risk if complications.

I'm trying to retrain my brain about food before surgery. I want to get used to eating consciously, smaller portions and because I'm hungry, not because I'm experiencing emotions. I'm also trying I NEVER have seconds. It's just unhealthy. I'm also learning that it REALLY DIES take 15 minutes for your brain to realize your hunger is satisfied.

I think that I would be setting myself up for depression if I waited until after surgery to make any changes at all. It would be too rude of an awakening for me

I would like to lose about 20 pounds before surgery. I am not required to do a liquid diet beforehand but I need to incorporate healthy eating habits beforehand and I would like to maximize my weight loss. Go for first weigh in on 11/29 hope to have vsg by 3/13.

Should I Start Losing Weight Now??? I Mean On My Own?? Or Should I Wait Til After Im Sleeved??

PLZ HELP

My doctor requires all patients to lose 10 - 15 lbs prior to sugery to make sure we don't have a fatty liver when we go in for surgery. I went to my siminar 2 months before my surgery date. I didn't do the two week pre-op appt. because I lived out of state, so I knew what he said I must lose and started to 'practice' what my life would be like. I didn't cut portions a lot, but I cut out ALL Snacks, I cut out all chips and all bread. The only bread I ate was when we went out to eat, and I'd nibble a little on what they bring to the table. I rode my husband's stationary bike a couple of times a week, not hard rides, but I got up to a mile and a half, I rode for ten minutes. Just these few changes and I lost 23 lbs by the morning of surgery. Wow! I started using a smaller plate, (salad plate) and I used (and still use some times) a small seafood fork. You'll be surprised what you can do!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
