First Day Back In The Gym... Im So Weak Now!

Recommended Posts

Well today I was cleared to hit the gym and I cannot believe how weak I am now. I am embarrassed to even lift weights at the gym because how weak I got. :(

I lifted weights for the first time today and was also surprised at how weak I was compared to where I was before surgery. I did the seated chest press and thought I could handle 50 lbs......NOPE! I ended up having to lower the weight to 20 lbs!!!!! So here I am on this big bulky machine with these little 10 lbs weights on each side lol. I'm gonna try and lift once a week for now because I'm very sore after my little session today. My advice is stick with it. Heck we all have to start from somewhere :)

Thanks! I will definitely stick with it, it was just a bummer when I went to grab my usual 45's for some hammer curls then realized I had to drop down to 30's... But when I see how flappy my arms are getting that is plenty of motivation not to give up!

The upside to this is though you may feel weaker on weights how much does your loss so far affect what you can do cardio wise? For me I'm down 50 with preop and I can definitely tell the difference and yesterday was my first day back to work ( I'm a baggage handler for united) it was soo much easier climbing in and out of the planes I was blown away

Been there Donny, hang in there and it will be ok. Being a lifter for most of my life, I started freaking out a little when I first got back to the gym after surgery and noticed how terribly weak I was. I was back to my former strength around 4-5 months after surgery. I know you'll keep with it, which will help a lot and remember, your muscles have memory, they just need to be reminded of their former strength.

Good to know, thanks! Because struggling to open my Vitamins and flappy arms is super frustrating lol. And as weird as it sounds but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, being sore the next morning again feels so good! Waking up without aching muscles felt so weird for the 5 weeks post op lol

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
