Dr never put me on a pre op diet. I see the NUT for the first time and have my final appointment with the surgeon on Thursday and then I have surgery on Monday.

Mortensenmommy

WLS December 3rd- excited, nervous - common feelings when you are about to have surgery

my dr. never put me on a pre-op diet- you could put yourself on a "self-imposed" diet" - do as i say not as i do ;)

you have one week before WLS

practice drinking as much Water as possible (64+ oz is the goal)

stop drinking 1/2 before you eat

don't drink with food/meal

wait about 45 minutes after you eat before you drink

these are approximate time periods - NUT will be more specific - always listen to your NUT :)

check with NUT regarding coffee, stop drinking regular and diet soda (problem w/carbonation)- your NUT might tell you different later

one NUT will say different from another NUT - they are all alittle "cracked"

decide you won't be a slave to your scale - only weigh yourself about once a week

all people lose weight at a different speed, and different amounts -

never compare yourself to others in regards to your weight loss amount, time it takes you to lose

get back into exercise

hmmmm, a couple of suggestions/comments :)

good luck

speedy recovery

I'm a week out (Nov 19th) and I sip, sip, sip. Protein every 2-3 hours, walk around the house to move things thru, rest when you can, take the pain med if you need it or to feel more comfortable (my drain site hurts) and DON'T do laundry!!! That was a really dumb move on my part. Good luck to you. I go for my 1st follow up tomorrow, so I may have no idea if these things work for everyone, but they work for me.

My advice... 1) As soon as the anesthesia wears off GET UP. The more you walk walk walk the better you feel. 2) sip all day long, it's your new mission to get in the Protein and Water. 3) sleep in an elevated position for a couple of nights (I ended up in my recliner a few nights). 4) keep track of what you eat and drink in a journal. I forget what I have had because it takes so long to finish something. 5) find a Protein Powder you like now. I tried several pre-op that tasted horrible. It makes it easier post op when you are having to force it down.

I am 1 1/2 weeks out and haven't had any complications. I wish you well.

My suggestions: Get all your food & supplies before surgery. I used better than boullion for liquids, lots of sugar free popsicles (went through 2 boxes in 10 days), I needed extra gauze & tape for my drain site & had to go to the store to get it. That sucked! Wean yourself off the sugar & caffeine now to save the withdrawal headaches later. Looks like you have a young child? Freeze some casseroles ahead of time so they can be re-heated so you won't have to cook.

Get Protein samples from bariatric pantry, unjury, etc. Don't try them now, they will probably taste different after surgery. Take lots of pics. I wish I had taken more, especially not fully clothed (like sports bra type) to compare to.

Good luck! Amy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
