Sleeve Verses Rny - Friend Pleading That I Shouldn't Get Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hello :) My name is Stephanie and I'm new here. I"m looking forward to getting to know all of you :)

I've done everything I need to do except my nutrisionist apt which is scheduled for mid Dec. I'm planning on having surgery in Feb. We are going on a vaca at the end of Jan so that's why I've decided on waiting till we get back. At that point I can totally focus on myself and nothing else.

I have a friend who had the RNY several years ago. She is her surgeons picture perfect patient :/ She's been telling me that her surgeon doesn't even perform the Sleeve because of the major problems that come along with it. So of course this is scaring me to death and making me feel like maybe I should get the RNY. She's also telling me that if I ever got esaphgas or stomach cancer I'm pretty much screwed. I'm a cancer servivor so this is a concern of mine!!! She sent me the following pros and cons list.

Here are my list of pros and cons

Gastric Bypass

Faster weight loss

Higher complications

Reversible

Less likely to regain

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

Slower weight loss

Less complications

Not reversible

Higher chance of regain

I'm getting very nervous and feel like I'm making a horrible decision in getting the sleeve. Although when I read this site I see a lot of good stories from people. I know with any surgery there are risks. I also know that there are also different outcomes for different people. I've done a lot of reading on RNY and Sleeve. I don't like the idea of having things rerouted but then again I don't like the idea of having my stomach cut out :s My surgoen does RNY but dosesn't like the Vitamin issues people tend to have after. That worries me too about the RNY. I worry about the long term issues with Sleeve. I know staying this way is a death sentence but we have a 3 year old little boy whose the light of our lives. I can't imagine not living a old life and not being there for him. Also we'd like to have another child but that's another story!

My husband is supportive but doesn't really talk too much about it. My parents are scared to death to say the least so I don't really feel like I can talk to them and they understand. So of course this friend I have talks to me about it but I feel like she's confusing me even more.

I've had 2 back surgeries with the last resulting in fusion. I've still got a lot of issues with my back going on so I'm unable to really get out and exersize at the moment cause of the pain I"m in. I know I need to do something about my weight because it's not going to happen on it's own and I can't seem to do anything that really gives long term results because of my disability.

Please can someone help me with my fears and questions??????????

I'm really confused, nervous and scared ;(

I think that you need to do some research on your own. I believe (I'm not a medical doctor) that your pro's and con's list is totally inaccurate. All the research I have read reports that the sleeve has a lot less complications than the RnY. It is one of the safer wls out there. From my understanding the RnY is not reversible and people do regain their weight because their pouches stretch. In fact for individuals that are extremely obese, they would first do the gastric sleeve before the RnY procedure. I have a friend that had an RnY and she regained 40 lbs of what she had lost. Other people I have spoken with have had weight gain too. Plus there's a lot of dumping and malabsorption issues with RnY.

Your friend has good intentions but is grossly misinformed....... Please do the research.... I love my sleeve and would do it over in a heart beat.

BTW I have had no complications from my surgery. My problem is my head hunger and sugar addiction. If you have any questions, please ask..... :)

Well, I can tell you why I didn't think RNY wasn't for me!!!

1.) malabsorption (multiple Vitamins daily)

2.) rerouting of intestines (increased risk of leakages)

3.) rapid weight loss (loose skin)

4.) dumping (can't eat any sugars)

Those are just a few for me. I still wanted to have a normal life and eat in moderation and the sleeve has done that for me. I personally haven't had any complications but I've seen some on BOTH sides. I choose what was best for ME!! I take 2 Vitamins daily ~ Calcium and Multivitamin. My labs have been SUPERB!!! I suffered from PCOS, PRE-DIABETES, snoring, shortness of breath ~ all of which are non existent 6 months post op today!!! I was even told ill never conceive ~ after years of seeing a fertility specialist and no success ~ I'm now 13 weeks pregnant! Me and my baby are both healthy right now!!! I still exercise, I've ran a 5K (NEVER could have seen this 6 months ago) I sleep and feel better about myself!

My advice, do your research for whats best for YOU!!!! You've heard both sides now....YouTube has a wealth of successful stories for both RNY and the sleeve. My channel is jmcbribe. Also I have a YouTube friend name Millaplus3 that had RNY and she looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! Ask questions!!!! Then make your decision!! Best wishes to you!

I started out at 283. I'm 186 today. (6 months...even though I lost slower than an RNY patient, I liked the fact it gave me a chance to tone my skin) But 90+ lbs in 6 months!!!! Who can do that without any surgery????

First of all take a deep breath and think about what are you able to deal with. You have a lot of things you want to do. I think they recommend you wait a year out to have a baby after this surgery. Personally if I wanted to have a baby I would do that first just to be sure my baby got really good nutrition. There are many women who have given birth to healthy babies after surgery. Just thinking about your back, preg, VSG that's a lot but you could do it!! I want to say though your list above is wrong the RNY is not reversible but the sleeve can be turned into an RNY. For me the malnuriousment part of it bothered me and the rerouting of my intestines so I didn't want that. If the sleeve doesn't work for you you can always get the RNY once you've had the RNY done then that's it. It was a really tough decision for me as well but I was sooooo tired of yo yo dieting and just being fat!! This is life changing are you ready to change your life HOLLAND then just do it!!!!!! Woo hoo!!! I will say this that surgery was faster than a c-section loll!! You will do fine it's a bit tough for the first month some pain and discomfort getting use to feeling everything you swallow but that goes away with time. Then you can enjoy being the new you and playing with your active 3 yr old I know I have one too. Any questions don't hesitate to ask I really don't mind answering your questions. Hope this helps!! Also YouTube videos helped me make up my mind and stay committed to my decision. Watch some of those they really can help.

Take care,

Jenipher

Being told ill never conceive and trying 13+ years, we believed what the docs told us!!! It wasn't in the plan but she's coming and we're excited! I'm doing everything I'm told to do by the docs and I believe we will do just fine!

Yes, that article states it is a reversible procedure. The reason that my co worker had it reversed was due to major complications that lasted 5 months. By the way VSG30815 CONGRATS on your amazing transformation, you look fabulous!!

Holland, I did extensive research before I chose the sleeve. I am a breast cancer survivor. I am 61.5 years, 4'11 tall. Being older and short makes losing weight more difficult. I was sleeved on 11/12, down at least 10 pounds in two weeks and I feel fabulous.

My research led me to believe that, in the long run, the sleeve is substantially safer. Ten years down the road, the people who were not deligent about taking Vitamins (and for RNY that's a ton of Vitamins all day, every day) experience serious health issues due to malabsorbtion of nutrients. Their teeth rot, their hair falls out, they have physical health issues. I already know that I am not going to remember to take all those vitamins.

I also know that I don't want anything rerouted. Period.

I went to six months of support group meetings before my surgery. What I learned is that the RNY patients still had issues with hunger. Not some. Most. I also met people who gained a lot of weight back. One patient has never lost weight, but she eats alot of pizza and ice cream (some mental health issues there).

There is a thread on this site titled "weight gain with the sleeve" or something like that. Read it.

My Dr.'s practice is a Center of Excellence. Not sure what that means, but my RN daughter says it's a big deal. He does RNY and Sleeve. If the sleeve wasn't good, he wouldn't do it.

Just like everyone said, do your own research. You can change your mind at any time. You need to be happy with your choice. Your friends and family love you, want the best for you. After you do our research, show them the facts and how you came to your decision.

At the beginning of the year when I first started researching weight-loss surgeries, I watched a lot of videos on YouTube. At least two of the gals who got the Roux-en-Y ended up getting the intestinal hernia, and came close to death. That is scary to me. There are more complications with RNY.

I'm off to watch the videos linked.

It is inaccurate that you can not regain with RNY, yes you can!! You can stretch your stomach and eat more. With either surgery you can chose the wrong foods and gain weight: ice cream, chips, chocolate. It is totally up to the patient how they do in this respect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
