I have United Healthcare and did not need the 6 mos diet. I provided everything else requested and was approved on the first submission within 4 days. I am now 2 weeks post op. Good luck and happy to help with how I documented everything.

Hello lexi710, I meet with my surgeon on 1-14-13. I have UHC PPO. How did you document? I have no comorbities, BMI 39. I hope I won't have to jump through hoops.

I have United Health Care and I was told in April/May that I was covered for the lap band or the sleeve. The sleeve is what I wanted so I started my 6 month supervised diet that UHC required and got all the medical clearances for surgery that my surgeon required along with the NUT visit, the psy eval etc. I was finished up with everything in October and UHC promptly denied me....I couldn't believe it! I have pseudotumor cerebri and have basically had a constant Migraine for about 10 years. The insurance company said that wasn't a co-morbidity. My surgeon had to call the insurance company and have the decision reversed.

That's great they reversed it! I have PTC too and when my surgeon had the peer to peer. The medical director literally laughed on the phone about PTC. :-/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
