I Wish I'd Known...

Recommended Posts

What is one thing you wish someone had told you about gastric surgery? Good or bad.

No matter how much I research, I fifigure'll still miss something, hence the question.

I wish I would have known that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be so I could have done this a lot sooner.

I only wished I'd decided to have it sooner.....I love the fact that I can eat a half of a serving size and feel stuffed....

I wish I would have known just how hard the eating stages are. I'm on puree right now, and I thought it'd be simple. I bought all sorts of things that would be simple to puree and eat...but I didn't realize that certain things would make me feel incredibly nauseous--or that my stomach would hate them.

I also wish I knew just how hard this surgery actually would be. Before I made up my mind, I watched tons of vids and did a lot of research. It seemed most people had an incredibly easy time. For me, it's been a lot rougher than I expected.

But... on a positive note, I wish I would have known that I would succeed. I spent a lot of time pre-surgery worrying that I wouldn't lose anything. But, it's been 2.5 weeks and I've lost 25 pounds!

Wish I'd done it sooner also. Today, I'm 5 months out of surgery and miss going to food for comfort. Wish I could have found another comfort before doing the surgery. I'm still looking for that special hobby that fills the void of me chewing. I pretty much eat anything I want now...just not alot of it. My stomach says Im starving and after a couple bites, I'm stuffed and feel like I was jipped out of something good. I look forward to the skin removal sometime next year. Hopefully during the summer. I had a rough time the first month and the mental part of what I had done was really tough the first week home....but other than that...its been a breeze. Today is my birthday and I told my family - No food, just gifts and visiting. Was a little odd but turned out ok.

:) You read my mind

I'm 43 and I really would have saved myself a lot of health issues if I had been able to do it 10 years ago. Of course back then they wouldn't have done the sleeve so I can't beat myself up too much for it.

I wish I'd known how easy this is! Twelve days out, I don't even feel like I had surgery. I was worried that at 61.5, I'd have a little trouble. None, zero, zip.

No one told me about the severe gas pain immediately after surgery. I would have appreciated a heads up. I wouldn't go back I'm so glad that I did it and my life will never be the same. I also feel like I look forward to meals that aren't as gratifying as before because of the small quantities now but I am perfecting the art of eating a half a spoonful of everything so I still get to taste what I want.

The day after I regretted it because of the pain. Now I am so glad I did it.

8 weeks and 35 lbs down.

I do miss eating though. Learning to eat small amounts slowly and chewing lots is hard to learn.

I am amazed by how much people eat, kind of grossed out by it. Obviously we can all get by on far less.

I now eat to live not live to eat.

Good luck on you surgery

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
