Sleeve Then Flu Now Struggling.

Recommended Posts

So I have my sleeve done on Nov 6th. I was doing great till this past Monday when I got the flu. Ever since I had that I am unable to eat. Anything I put in my mouth tastes discussing and I feel like I am going to throw up. I went like 4 days without anything but fluids. Now I am struggling. I am so weak and can't hardly function. Any suggestions on what I should do to get back to normal?

I got cut off. But I wanted to say that I have been drinking all day and tried to eat turkey for two meals today and was able to keep it down. I just wish I would get back to where I was before I got the flu.

What a terrible time to get the flu! I was sleeved on the 7th, the day after you.

What diet has your Dr got you on? I'd probably be checking with them and looking to maybe go back on pureed diet for a time?

Good luck and take it easy,

Deano

My diet is soft foods. Problem is I can't even stand to drink Protein Shakes or anything. With the first sip I feel like I am going to get sick. It sucks. I was doing so well before and now I am so weak and not able to hardly get through the day. It is a real struggle.

Feel better! Now you will need to focus on how to take care of yourself without food. Hot bath, menthol vapor, tea, heating pad, magazines or just allowing yourself to chill out. Take care of yourself and give yourself the princess treatment!!

You may need fluids or an IV in case you are dehydrated. Maybe you should call your doctor.

Wow. I was sleeved on the 7th and I'm on liquids still for 5 weeks post surgery. I'm supposed to have three Protein Shakes made with skim milk and 1 yogurt. I can barely get two shakes in a day. I am not hungry and don't feel like eating. I can't imagine eating any kind of foods right now. I am supposed to start puréed foods on week six post op. anyway, I find it interesting that each person here seems to be on a different eating regime. I hoe that u are feeling better.

Have you tried Vitamin Water Zero? This would increase your Vitamins and help you fight the flu and possibly help give you a little more energy. Did they give you a B12 shot in the hospital? That's supposed to help with the energy level as well. Also, to help get at least a little Protein in, there is the Special K Protein Water (Strawberry Kiwi or strawberry Lemonade) that you mix with water. Maybe the dairy of the shakes is messing with your icky of the flu only making it worse. Granted, each Special K Protein water only has 5g of protein per serving, but at least it's something. :)

I hope you get better!

Hi. I hope you feel better soon. Being sick right after being sleeved does not sound fun. I read your comment about Protein shakes and how you are struggling with them. What brand do you currently take? I have found the Syntrax Nectar and Matrix sweet flavors very tasty. My favorites are any flavors that taste like Cookies and creme! I guess that has always been a favorite of mine. I mix it with light soy because me and milk have a not so good working relationship. It may be better not, but I have not tried. I used to be a big peach and banana flavor guy before surgery, but cannot stand them now. Go figure. It takes some time to find out what works individually for you. Everyone is different. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

I was sleeved Nov 6 and got strep throat a few days later. I ended up in the ER for a few hours to get hydrated. If you can't get enough fluids then definately talk to your Dr about getting some IV fluids. It made me feel much better and was able to keep hydrated after that. It's a vicious cycle, dehydration makes you feel worse= dont feel like drinking..

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Try to drink some Powerade zero to help keep your electrolytes in check. If its too strong straight, go ahead and Water it down.

We've made it without food before- just try to get your 64oz of Fluid down to keep hydrated.

What about good old fashioned chicken broth? Our version of chicken Soup maybe??

I hope it passes quickly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
