Why Am I Eating When I Am Not Hungry?

Recommended Posts

Why oh why!! I feel like I am falling back into my old habits. I find myself eating when I am not hungry. I am 10 weeks out, and I am not losing weight as fast as I would like, so I think I am just getting depressed about it and find myself eating. Granted, I can't eat as much as I used to, but still!! Why am I doing this. Grrr

You said it yourself - habit. So, time to make a new one. Find out why you're eating when you're not hungry. Are you bored? Tired? Thirsty? When you notice you're eating, stop and go do something else. Replace it with something healthy like walking (which also helps reduce hunger so bonus!). Nobody has to tell you that this is a tool, not a fix. If we don't change the habits that got us here in the first place, the surgery is for nothing. Don't beat yourself up, don't be hard on yourself, but you're the only one who can make the decision to change.

Old habits are hard to break. I'm 6mths out and feel like I'm losing control. I'm down 97lbs but totally messing up. I eat whatever and whenever. We need to get a grip.

Hey Shelly I am 10.5 weeks and found I was doing the same thing eating at night but not hungry. So I stopped having so many Snacks, started taking a prevacid type medicine and bingo I am really now not hungry don't want to eat at night. So what I found is that 6 small meals is too much I didn't need it. My weight loss is great and I couldn't be happier. Give it a try. You can do this!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
