Calories or carbs

Recommended Posts

Hi Joe,

I count calories every day, but try to be sensitive to getting in more Protein and lower carbs. Fitday.com has been my saving grace, since it keeps me honest about what I'm eating. By the way, you're doing great! Congratulations on your weight loss!!!:clap2:

Right now, neither formally. I counted both for a while until I kind of figured out what I could have for a day and keep within my range. I do limit carbs, and avoid processed ones as much as I can.

I usually stick to around 1200-1300 cal a day and a South beach like diet with more Protein than carbs. I do eat carbs but try to make them as healthy as possible. If I have to choose b/w higher fat and Protein and low carb or lower fat and higher calorie and carb I will usually go with the protein/fat. I tend to lose more that way:)

I think I eat fewer carbs by default in that by aiming for 60 grams of Protein per day it automatically reduces my carbs. But I don't strictly count either. I tend to stay under 1,400 calories a day with 1,400 being my rare days when I "pig out". Most days I'm probably at 1,000-1,200. Protein makes me much more full than carbs, so I find myself avoiding them in favor of protein rich foods. But other than that it's anything goes!

Calories, but I also make sure I don't eat carbs after 3pm (don't know if it is a quack tip, like so many are, but I have the "Biggest Loser" cookbook and the trainers recommend no carbs after 3pm.)

Neither really, but I guess I always have a rough idea in my head about calories consumed for the day, after 30 years of dieting its pretty much second nature.

I really dont believe in counting carbs, I dont think low carb is a healthy or balanced lifestyle. I like my bread, cereals and fruit and veg and I think its an essential part of a healthy diet in moderation.

Neither, nor do I count points, Protein or anything. I have failed at diets all of my life. I don't want to spend the rest of my life on a diet. Instead, I just make healthier choices and listen to my band when it tells me it is time to stop eating. I am losing the recommended 1-2 pounds a week by doing this and thrilled with my progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
