Surgery First Or Baby First?

Recommended Posts

I have been told so many different things about what's the best decision: have sleeve first and lose weight then have my second child or visa Versa. At this point I have decided to have the surgery, lose the weight, then have a second baby. I am just very scared that I will gain back lots of weight during pregnancy. Does anyone have insight/been through this that can shed some light for me?! Thanks so much

I am an L&D nurse and I see everyday then risk that women face when they are overweight and pregnant.

I would first talk with your OB before making any decisions. So much depends on your risk factors as far as your health is concerned. Pregnancy puts such a stress on your body even if you are healthy. Then throw in weight issues, possible gestational diabetes risks, your age, vag vs. c section history etc...

Make an appt with your OB and sit down with him/her to discuss your options before going any further... Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks so much for your input! I did speak with my OB and it was because of her advise that I am moving forward with this surgery first. Her advise sounded a lot like yours. I am just worried that I will gain lots of weight back after working so hard to get it off.

Have you been on the "preg & VSG" board yet? They have some good topics over there & at least one currently preg sleever that I know of. I also have decided to do surgery 1st & shoot for baby after. I did 2 overweight/obese pregs & it was awful. Maybe I'm just not made for preg but I'm hoping that I can have a normal one at a normal weight. :} best wishes!!

Last year, while i was "obese" I was going to have my 2nd knee replacement 2 months before WLS

you are now considering having a new baby before WLS?

having WLS first, losing a lot of weight before knee surgery was extremely helpful-easier for me with PT and other things with my walking

IMO losing weight prior to any surgery is the way to go

having a baby is different of course ^_^

maybe, not a fair analogy?? to me weight loss first is a better option

sounds like you have made the wise decision to lose weight first

after you have the wonderful baby - you'll be all the healthier, and able to run after him!!!

mwrrr made a good suggestion on visiting the other boards for help/advice on pregnancy/losing weight prior to baby - and gaining during pregnancy - and wanting to lose after the fact

good luck to you

I too am in the same boat, baby two or wls. I also choose weight loss surgery first. Then hopefully once my weight stabilizes we will try. I'm worried about gaining too much weight when pregnant but I'm hopeful that the sleeve will be the tool I need to help others not get out of control.

I was wondering this too... Personally I am doing WLS first, then after I reach goal I will start to think about baby #2... My brother (who is in the Marine Corp) kinda helped me with this descion. He is getting stationed in Japan in March for 3 years and my sister in law and him made me promise not to have another baby until they get back!. LoL I told them great that gives me plenty of time to be at goal and maintain before another pregnancy!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
