Unable To Eat.... Help

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 weeks out today. Last night they kept me overnight at the hospital for being dehydrated. Since I started mushy foods, I just haven't been able to eat, or drink my Protein Drinks. I can get a couple of bites of food in but it's torture. I feel like it's getting worse. The Protein Shakes are out of the question. What have I done to myself? I can't fix this, I'm terrified.

If you are still in the hospital, you are in good hands so relax and trust that although it is scary right now, it will get better. If you are home, take comfort in knowing the hospital wouldn't have released you if you were in danger. Keep trying a little bit at a time and sipping Water so you stay hydrated. I haven;t been sleeved yet, so I don't know what you are feeling, but I do know that fear makes what you are feeling much worse. Concentrate on your breathing, staying calm and reach out to your mentors here. Keeping good thoughts for you, girl.

Yeah, your in good hands you will be ok. You just have to sip fluids every hour of your day when home. It was hard for me but after sipping a cup each hour it got easier to keep on sippin and then eating. Best wishes and hang in there.

Ok, just because your doctor, or your paperwork says you can start mushies does not mean that your sleeve is ready to. Stop the puréed/mushies and go back to full liquids for a few days. Get yourself back to hydrated and energized with Protein and then try mushies again. Try slowly though. One meal a day of mushies and the rest full liquids until you can tolerate the mushies better.

I had to drink peppermint tea that was warm (not hot) during times like you are describing. During the first week post-op when I could not drink anything except warm tea and regular lemon-lime gatorade I didn't worry about getting protein.I also had difficulty everytime I moved to different stages. Now I am cleared to eat anything and still I have days when I can't eat - warm tea is a lifesaver for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
