2 Questions: Swelling And Actigall

Recommended Posts

1. I am 7 days post op and stomach is so swollen. Would a heating pad help reduce the swelling? I can't even wear normal pants!

2. How do you all take your gallbladder medication? Opening that capsule in food tastes terrible! Suggestions would be great!

Hi Karen,

The hospital pharmacist looked into this for me and said patients are supposed to wait until they are two weeks post op before taking it. It is horrible, but I was able to start eating yogurt by the time I began taking it. Mixing it with yogurt makes it tolerable. I think it is worth taking to prevent a future surgery. Best of luck.

A few days out I was swallowing my capsule pills. I would just put it at the back of my throat, put some Water in my mouth and swallow. My dr said that was okay and of course you may want to check with yours as well to see if that's okay.

You got pills to prevent needing gallbladder surgery? I have read with rapid weight loss you may have issues with your gallbladder.. if there is a way to prevent that, I would love in on it! I hated surgery! I don't want to do it again!

My surgeon doesn't give it to all of his patients, but before I undergo any surgery, I have to stop another med for at least a week. If I had to get my gallbladder out in an emergency I would be at a higher risk of bleeding. I don't know if it is 100% effective or not, but thought if was good idea. I would give you surgeon or primary care doctor a call and see if they will put you on it. The generic name for it is ursodiol.

my doc did start me on Ursodiol. I was told to start it one month post op, for the next six months.

I came home from the hospital taking Actigall. I open the capsule, and mix the contents in unsweetened applesauce. As sensitive as my taste buds are, since surgery, I don't notice any alteration to the taste of the applesauce. You might give that a try.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
