How long does it take to fade? Or are you simply stuck with a yucky, ugly scar forever??

Yes you will have a scar forever. Depending how you heal and the abilities of the surgeon it may be less or more visible.

can I ask if it the surgery is worth it? Is it better to have gone through it all and just have scars or is it better to have flabby skin? Just curious to peoples opinions.

The scars suck, but I am planning on having mine disguised with tattoos. It will be a bright belt of flowers.

That's cute, SassyGirl! I, too, am wondering if I'd rather have little bit of flab over a great big scar. I guess it will all depend on how much flabby skin is left on my tummy after I lose the weight I plan/want/hope to lose.

I'm wondering also if it's the people who have been really overweight pretty much their entire lives who have the saggy skin issues and perhaps people who used to be more fit but gained weight over, say the past ten years or so, may not have skin that bounces back more. Just wondering...

Well that depends on if you have stretch marks on your stomach or not. I have stretch marks from having children, and so my stomach will never look normal without a Tummy Tuck. I am tired of having to buy clothes that are big and long so they can cover up my stomach. It really makes me look so big up top because I have to hide it. I can't wait to wear normal shirts. However I have had several friends that have lost weight that didn't have stretch marks and they come out of it with no skin issues.

I have been overweight my entire life and I have had to babies. There is no solution for me other than a Tummy Tuck after losing all my weight. It does all depend on how well you heal and how skilled your surgeon is. I haven't had the surgery, but I have seen a few others scars. It is hip to hip, but it is very low. Most can still wear a bikini (as long as it is not a g-string type or super skimpy). For me, I would take the scar over the amount of saggy skin I have any day, just trying to save for it now! I would probably be a pants size smaller if I didn't have so much skin. But, I would take the saggy skin over being overweight in a heartbeat! Clothes can hide almost anything!!

I had a section in 2006, Tummy Tuck in 2008, while I made the mistake of getting the surgery prior to getting rid of all of my excess weight, it did help me in the gym bc I worked out better w/o having to look down and see that pouch of skin. However, my main piece of advice is to make sure you have a great doctor! Mine had to revise twice in his office and it still looks terrible, never flat! I went for a second opinion for revision and the doctor agreed if he did that surgery he would have been disappointed and fixed it the right way. So all in all get a good doc! Don't assume a nice doctor is a good doctor!

I too am looking at a Tummy Tuck but I think it is better and get the weight off before really spending much time thinking of it. My hanging tummy isn't nearly as bad as I feared (I am apple shapped, overweight most of my life, had kds, older, etc - expecting the worst!). I never planned on wanting a TT, just braced myself for the worst of it. Well, it isn't THAT bad but now I am a size 10 - shooting to be a six 6 and I WANT it now. i want a tighter body. I want to fix my thighs too, but I don't think the surgeries get those good kind of results. Anyway, I am going to do a consult soon, with the idea of surgery maybe a year from now since my body is still changing and I want to lose another 20-25# too.

Anyway, I guess my point is ... one thing at a time. Your ideas about what you want will likely evolve once you have lost the weight.

I love the idea of the flowers - very clever!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
