Hypothyroid And Getting The Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 3 years ago, making it harder than usual to lose weight. It's under control with meds, but it did not help speed up weight loss. My endocrinologist highly recommended gastric bypass, but it seemed so drastic to me,

Once I heard about the sleeve, and attended a seminar, I knew it was for me.

I'm looking for other hypothyroid patients who have had the surgery and i am interested in hearing your experience.

Thanks,

Michelle

My story is a bit like your guys! I dont have hypothyroidism, but have something similar. I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in 2010 and have had a total Thyroidectomy since then, so my TSH levels are kept up with Levoxyl/Levothyroxine/Synthroid. I have my surgery on November 29th! I also would like to follow along stories with patients with Thyroid problems! Looking forward to hearing about your success!!! <3

I was diagnosed about 13 years ago with hypothyroidism. I'm on meds but my levels are never stable. I'm set to have surgery 12/3 and am curious if it will make a huge difference. My endocrinologist seems to think it will.

I have hypothyroid..had my surgery 10-23.. I have lost 23 pounds so far. My TSH level was never normal so I am anxious to see what it will be like when i go for my blood work at the end of December.

I also had my thyroid removed because of cancer. Didn't really think about this in considering the sleeve. Have Type II diabetes also and that is why I am doing this.

my TSH levels are never normal as well, def a huge reason as to why its so difficult to lose weight/keep gaining weight! mine have been as high as the 200s, about to get bloodwork done tomorrow, so ill know what they are right now in a few days. im also interested to see if they'll go down and stay down after my surgery in 10 days.

I have thyroid issues too (hashimoto's thyroid) and had a very hard time losing weight! It was a struggle!! My doctor suggested I look into WLS and was very happy when I did decide to get it done. I had surgery on July 10th and as of this morning, I am down 65 pounds. I feel great.

The only thing I need to do now is see my doctor every 6 weeks for blood work. Because the weight is coming off quickly, he wants to monitor my TSH levels closely to make sure I am getting the right dosage of Levoxyl. He does not want me to go into hyper mode!

I initially wanted the band and after research, decided on the sleeve. My surgeon at first tried to talk me into the full bypass but for me that was too extreme as well. I am super happy with my sleeve. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them.

Good luck!!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in Feb of 2009. I gained around 60-70 lbs in a few years and could not take it off and keep it off. And that was above the weight I already had to lose. My thyroid levels are controlled by synthroid since then but the weight just would not come off. I had surgery on 8-21-12, 3 months ago and am now 54 lbs lighter than I was before. I took off 10 lbs prior to surgery, so 44 lbs lost since surgery. I'd say it also was a big concern of mine, wondering if it would make a difference with my weight still having hypothyroidism, and having the surgery. I am SO happy that I followed thru with it, it's life changing. Best of luck to all of you who have thyroid issues!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
