Sugar Substitute And Aspartame?

How was quitting the diet coke for you? I am just having my first one of the day (far better than before) and it's 4:30pm. I could seriously fall asleep sitting up at work' date=' and in my line of work, lets say that's not the safest! I'm wondering if I should just quit cold turkey or if I should continue weening myself off of it? Am i just prolonging the pain/tiredness and headaches?[/quote']

I quit cold turkey and I hate it now. It's disgusting to me. I love coffee to wake up now. You have to do it what's best for you, but IMHO, I quit cold turkey because I felt if I didn't it would never happen: u can do it, trust me, it was like Water to me.

ugh me too :(

I'm thinking I'll drink whatever is left in the house and then THATS IT! I gotta do it. I feel like it's prolonging my tiredness and headaches, the weening off thing isn't working well for me.

I've been trying to wean myself, too....ugh! It's awful. I get the worst headaches. I hate coffee, so that's not gonna happen... I tried excedrin Migraine before when quitting but it doesn't really work. I think beyond the caffeine, I'm totally addicted to the texture. Even now, that I'm thinking about the fizzing, I totally want a sip.

I quit exactly 1 week before surgery I think. My instructions were to quit all caffeine 1 week before surgery, and I drank it right up to that point. At that point I didn't have a choice, I HAD to stop. You don't want to do anthing that might impact your surgery so just the fear of that is enough to help you quit :) I had headaches for a few days. Now post op, I don't miss it.

I cut diet coke cold turkey when I hit my pre op diet. I did NOT want to stop drinking it' date=' I was so addicted! I never thought I'd be able to do it. But other than a few days of headaches from the caffeine withdrawals (I don't drink coffee) it wasn't so bad. I am not craving it now. I only got the aspartame from the diet coke though, other than that my preferred sweetener is Splenda or erythritol. I can't buy Truvia in Canada and I don't like straight stevia.[/quote']

When I quit smoking 7 years ago I accidentally quit diet coke too... I used to buy 2 20oz drinks with cigarettes daily. I stopped stopping for cigarettes... Hence no diet coke. The nicotine and caffeine withdrawal was awful. I was a mean insomniac! Now I don't miss either anymore... I also prefer Splenda to aspartame.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
