O.M.G. I am so amazed! It's been 6 weeks since my doc's office submitted to insurance. I was certain, after reading so many posts, that it taking this long meant it was going to be denied. I'M APPROVED! My surgery date is January 14th, with Dr. David Kim. He did my band, too. He is a wonderful surgeon. His office is the best. And I am thrilled to finally be moving forward.

I was banded in March of 2010. I was in love with my band for 6 months. I lost 65 lbs. Started at 282. Onederland was in sight. Then the rollercoaster began. I got too tight. Got several small unfills. Gained some back. Started filling again. And every time I started filling again, the amount it took to get "too tight" got smaller. When it was too tight I could not even get Water down. Too loose and I gained. I played with the same 20 lbs, back and forth, until June of this year. Then the big one hit. I started throwing up "coffee ground" stuff. Guess that's blood they say. So they did a total unfil and suggested a revision.

I agreed. I was done. I was so frustrated. I felt like a failure at the band. My PA was great. He told me it was the band that failed, not me. The fact that I lost 65 lbs shows I was successful. The band just turned out to not be what everyone hoped.

I've read so many people that swear the sleeve is what we always hoped the band was going to be. Well, here I go! I'm determined to get this right. I've now gained back every pound I lost on the band. I'm ready to do this. I paid cash for my band, due to different insurance that didn't cover. I'm so thrilled I will be getting some help from insurance this time.

I'm scared to death of having part of my stomach removed! But I'm MORE scared of staying obese the rest of my life. Already my joints are in constant compaint and I am so uncomfortable. I have so few things to wear because I refuse to spend money on clothes I don't feel good in anyway. I can't wait!

My insurance is Samba through Cigna. For those of you looking for success stories about Cigna. Mine went well. Took forever, but I'm approved! Woo hoo!

Ready to take back my life!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
