What Am I Doing Wrong? Am Depressed!

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone,

I just registered today but i have been creeping on this site for almost 2 months Now, (Sorry about that, i wasnt ready to post anything yet) I had surgury on the 7th of november of this month over seas and i was pretty shocked because i went to set up surgery date on the 6th and my doctor surprised me by asking me if i can be ready the next day... Oh well how could i say no to that? I went in weighing 239 lbs and with no pre diet or anything.. I left one day after surgery had to sip for three days because i couldn't drink well but after that i drank a lot more i drink about 5 cups of Water a day since then and over the first 8 days lost 19 pounds but now am at a stall lost .5 grams in the last 3 days :( oh and my doctor wanted me on liquid diet 1 week then now am on mushy/ pureed food until thursday but i am cheating i do eat chew ables sometimes am no saint and my stomach... But now 11 days after my op i am wondering why my doctor didn't tell me to drink any Protein Shakes nor gave me any medicines more than a capsule that i take in the morning to protect my new stomach... I feel depressed, am i losing enough weight? What happens if i don't drink any Protein shakes or take Vitamin pills? I am currently in lebanon and i don't know where i would get Protein drinks from, am so lost and scared i will fail :(

Ok, first off, take a deep breath and step away from the scale! All will be fine.

I'm not trying to be rude when I say that your surgeon may not have been the best surgeon if he was willing to do surgery on somebody with no pre-op diet etc but we are past that.

If he gave you no information whatsoever here is a booklet that was posted by another member which is really informative. http://www.muhealth.org/documents/bariatric/Bariatric%20Booklet%20VSG.pdf.

You should be trying to get 60-80 grams of Protein per day. If you can do that without the use of Protein drinks then I am amazed. However, it can be done. Drink lots of milk etc. Are you able to shop on Amazon at all? They have a ton of great protein powders.

As for Vitamins you really should be taking a multi-Vitamin as well as Vitamin B-12. That is the very minimum you should be taking. You could also add in some Iron and some Biotin but those are not so necessary.

Put the scale away!!!! Weighing everyday is not healthy! 3 days is not a stall, it's normal! Your body has noooo idea what you have done to it and wants to make sure you are not starving to death. Weigh yourself once a week max. If things don't change for 2-3 weeks then you are in a stall and may need to jump start things. You will lose weight! You just have to be patient!

Come to these forums often, they a great resource and you will find many helpful, caring people here.

Good luck.

hi There!! WELCOME!

Congrats on the 19lbs lost!!!

As far as Protein shakes... I would definitely suggest starting to drink them or incorporate them into your daily routine. At this point, you aren't able to get the reccomened Protein in with the way your eating. Not sure why your doctor didn't suggest or give you a plan to follow. Seems odd... are you able to contact him and ask?

I'm thinking you can possible order protein drinks online from where you are from.. not sure?

it's normal to be scared! But just believe in yourself and you won't fail! I had surgery on oct. 30th and am down 25lbs... I only lost 1 pound last week, but I'm not going to give up. I know I will lose more. Our bodies just need to adjust.

There is a lot of great information on this site... best of luck to you!

I can see a couple things you are doing "wrong".

First and foremost you are stressing this too much. You had your surgery on the 7th, and now thirteen days later you've lost 19lbs. You should be dancing with joy instead of worrying about 3days that the scale hasn't moved.

Then, GET OFF THE scale. If you scaled once a week, you wouldn't be stressing this right now. Did you know that stress can negativally affect weight loss? Just do what you are supposed to do and everything will be fine.

Protein is second only to Water in importance. Will a lack of protein keep you from losing weight? Not likely, but what it can do is cause your body to consume the muscle on your body to get the amino acids it needs, it can also affect your hair and nails. Keep in mind, the more muscle you retain the easier your weightloss will be. Muscle burns fat 24/7.

Remember. Everybody stalls, although 3days is kind of a mini stall. I can assure you, if you do what you are supposed to do, you will not fail.

Welcome. I had no pre op diet either, not all doctors do that. I did have Protein shakes the first week only. Once I switched to puréed and then real food I was and am able to get my Protein with out the shakes. (thank god because I hated them).

I think your surgeon jumped the gun a bit with no instructions for post op. although I had no pre op diet I was set up before hand on what to expect and what to do.

I'd call your dr and tell him all of this. If he brushes you off find another one. Or find a Nut near you and have him/her advise you.

Good luck

Thank you all for the great advice, this surely helped me understand a lot! I don't think i can shop online from here, but i will go to stores and look for the multi Vitamins you told me about! My doctor told me what to eat the first and second week and he transferred me to a NUT and they told me what is best for me but also no Vitamins nor shake, i was lost until i decided to vent on this forum and feel much better with all the info you told me and the website was so helpful also!

I am sorry i don't know how to make tags on names nor quote but i will eventually learn =)

Thank you all for your comments you helped me a lot and i will put the scale away for now :D

Hi Everyone. I am new here too. I was sleeved on Halloween. My doctor did not have me on a pre-op diet because my liver was not enlarged. The point of pre-op diet is to lose weight quickly so the instruments can be placed without much obstruction. I am having a hard time consuming enough liquids per day. I cannot tolerate Protein Drinks so I continue to search for the right one that will work for me. I have people asking me if it bothers me that they eat in front of me. Of course not and I am thankful not to be hungry. One thing that is upsetting - I am so sensitive to smells. If my husband has garlic, I cannot be near him without feeling nauseated. Hopefully this will pass. I wish you continued success in your weight loss journey!

Ms skinniness thank you for ur reply, this is surely not an easy way out like everyone says it it! We go through a lot before and after the surgery, not to mention the change in personality that we have to go through in order to accept who we are and become. I will do more research and ill go tomorrow morning for a hunt for Proteins and Vitamins :) best of luck to u and everyone here!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
