Should I Be Able To Do This?

Recommended Posts

I am one week post op and I just wanted to see what I could tolerate... I made spaghetti for my family's dinner tonight and I was able to eat 3/4 cup of meat sauce with maybe five or six noodles. It went down with absolutely no problem. I know I know I shouldn't be doing this.... But my question is why could I?

You should be careful you're putting yourself at risk for a leak. The amount isn't a worry your fresh staple line isn't ready for beef!

Heya Spieldose! Good to see you here from IG!

I've not been brave enough to try anything like that. But please proceed with caution! I don't want to see anything happen to you now that you've come so far!

It may go down cause no one said it wouldn't. However your staple line is new and if you stretch it before it heals you may cause a leak which isn't worth the spaghetti.

There's a difference between "shouldn't" eat something and "can't" eat something. And just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. You're paying your surgeon/nutritionist a lot of money just to start out the journey ignoring their directions. (I'm just sayin'.)

Thanks. I will go back to my liquids. I just thought that maybe I'm a fast healer... Since I hear people talking about not being able to stomach liquids... And I can already stomach heavier. I chewed each bite a ridiculous amount and took incredibly small bites so I don't think I have done any damage so far. People say "listen to your sleeve", and I honestly expected to feel sick or to immediately throw up if my sleeve was rejecting something...I thought my sleeve would reject it. I'm in no pain at all anymore and I feel like I could even go back to the gym right now. Reading that some people started pureed food while IN the hospital just lead me to think that maybe it would be okay. I wish I had an X-ray at home so I could see what exactly is going on in there!

I was able to do it too, but ended up in the hospital a week after surgery with pancreatitis, be careful because that was painful

I also developed pancreatitis, when I was three weeks out from my surgery. I tested myself eating a few things I shouldn't have as well, not that this caused the pancreatitis, but who knows. I had to spend over a week in the hospital after that on IV nutrition. Trust me, give yourself time to heal. My surgery was October 9th and I was a revision from the lapband and I'm just now starting to eat some normal foods in tiny quantities. That was an experience and amount of pain I never again want to go thru!

At one week out you are still swollen and numb.

I'm resisting lecturing you, or criticizing you too badly because I don't know you.... But you did come here for support. So next time you want to disobey your doctors orders, go ahead. Lots of people have 'permission' to eat sooner than others. But if you hurt yourself because YOU disobeyed your docs orders, you will be the one paying the ultimate price.

Be grateful that you are doing so well. Don't abuse that. If your cravings are that powerful, then you really should seek professional help. You want this to be a life-changer and unless you work the program in your head too, you may not be successful.

Ok... Lecture over. :-)

I won't lecture either because no one is perfect. Those who can cheat probably have and those that can only do liquids would probably give anything to cheat and not hurt. I have read a couple of your posts that you have cheated and want so badly to be checked for a leak or have an x-ray machine at home to check, but bottom line is, you are worried about causing a leak based on your own actions/decisions. Cheating is what got us in this position to begin with. I would cheat and have an extra piece of pizza when I already had two and was already full. This surgery isn't a miracle. It is damned hard to control our minds. This to me is more of a mind game than anything. My sleeve merely tells me when I have screwed up again. You are the one that will pay for any complications. Not us, not anyone else. You deserve to lose weight. You deserve to be happy and healthy. Don't sabotage yourself because you want to test the Water. You buckled down and was able to get your surgery. Now buckle down and reap the rewards of it.

And now I'm off my soapbox. Sorry about the rant. I believe sometimes in the tough love scenario. Good luck!!!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
