Yes..but I had GERD prior to surgery and mine is 10,000xs worse now. I am on a daily Dexilant 60mg pull and if I miss it I know it! I have it so horrible I would wake up choking on the reflux. So, I suppose I will be on this the rest I my life.

I've had a lump in my throat/sternum, all day. I knew it must have been trapped acid as it came on straight after lunch (which, itself, was nothing controversial) because I'd forgotten to take my PPI. Fast forward 15 hours, two PPI, two glugs of Gaviscon and there was nothing else for it.. I went to the toilet, leaned over (for gravity to help), burped and up came pure bile (no food). Bright yellow. It didn't hurt my 12 day old sleeve to bring it up as it was clearly trapped outside of the stomach and in the esophagus, but I have the residual burn which is now preventing me from sleeping. I do NOT want this to become the norm and it is greatly scaring me. I guess the only thing I can do is remember to take my PPI first thing in the morning and hope it works from this point onwards... Even my GP said long term use of PPI was bad.. and the long term prognosis for sleevers who have severe GERD is a bypass. I really really don't want that. Does that mean I'll be eating plain yoghurt for the rest of my life?

:(

Yerp! Glad you were able to get rid of the bile! Check out this thread, too: http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/93805-lump-sensation-in-my-throat/

Taking the PPI an hour before eating is supposed to be the best, but I don't always manage it. My surgeon had me take it for the first month, then said I could continue it - if I felt I needed it - as long as I needed it. So I try to take it daily and find it makes a big difference.

Yep, I'm going to have to show total commitment to the PPI cause now. I'd gone three days without it and thought I was good. Clearly not...

This may sound nuts, but it worked for me. I have a cup of Water with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of honey. The problem with acid reflux, as I understand, is not that you have acid. It is that the valve between your tummy and esophagus doesn't stay tightly closed. Certain things trigger it to relax and others trigger it to close. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking all trigger relaxation in the valve and encourage acid reflux. Acids tighten the valve, hence why vinegar works.

This isn't for everyone, but give it a try if you want. Works for me. Another good quick relief is maalox.

Does that mean I'd have a legitimate reason to ingest Balsamic vinegar? Winner!! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
