Sugars Or Carbs?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks out but have only lost 5 lbs. I have been concentrating on limiting my intake to 600 calories and 60 grams of Protein a day. My doctor didn't say anything in particular about sugars or carbs though. I have seen that some people on this board try to limit their sugars to 10 grams a day but that seems really low. Others concentrate on limiting their intake to under 40 grams of carbs a day. I was just curious about what kind of guidelines others try to follow as far as sugars and carbs? My opinion is that the sugar and carbs shouldn't really matter when I am only consuming 600 calories and 60 grams of protein but, since I haven't lost much weight, I'm beginning to wonder if it does matter?

im gonna go out on a limb and say they def do matter, Or you were thin to begin with. My total carbs for one week were 140...and my sugars were 56g. I would cut back on on your carbs and sugar.

Also Im just three weeks out and am losing slowly, I am however at fifteen lbs lost. Are you on My fitness pal, its a great tool for tracking and to se what others are eating:-)

How many grams of carbs a day should we have then on a 600 calorie, 60 grams of Protein diet?

My diet recommends 20-30% of daily calories come from carbs-or max of 20 grams/day at 600 calories. I track on MFP so I can see some days I'm fine but others I'm over. When I have 2 Protein Shakes a day as 2 meals and a few dairy items, I'm good. Once I increase food and decrease shakes, the % goes up.

Variation is key. Keep it guessing.

My NUT said 60 carbs per day - try for no carbs at 3pm. Right now I have cut out all bread, Pasta, rice and sweets out of my diet. I figure for the honeymoon stage (5 weeks out) I want to be sure that I am making good choices and building a new lifestyle. I have usually around 20 carbs per day right now.

If you're talking strictly about weightloss, it matters more than anything. People have lost lots of weight without limiting anything else except carbs. If you have a normal metabolism, it's not the be all-end all. But most people here do not have a normal metabolism. And even if you did, eating so few calories will certainly make it abnormal very soon. So yes, limit your starchy carbs. I'm talking about potatoes, breads, pastas, corn....those are the things that inhibit weight loss. The other kinds of carbs, fruits and especially green veggies, are not a problem. I would go so far to say that green veggies are mostly free calories. Meaning you don't really need to count them because with the sleeve it would be very difficult to take in too many calories with those foods. A large head of lettuce is only 100 calories. Who here can even eat a whole head at one time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
