Shake As Meal Or Shake As Snack?...i'm Confused.

Recommended Posts

I am 1 week out and I just tried my first 1/2 scrambled egg tonight. I even put a tiny drop of ketchup on it because I like ketchup on my eggs. I took about 30 minutes to eat tiny bites of it and I chewed and chewed. I didn't have any problems so far! I am happy about that!

Anyway, on my plan, I am allowed to start adding more solids in soon. Foods such as moist turkey and chicken, cottage cheese and canned fruits in own juice, eggs, etc. I am supposed to have 3 meals a day and 2 Snacks a day. I have been eating shakes for meals and something like yogurt or cream Soup for snacks. Now that I can have more solids I don't know how to manage my meals/snacks. Should I eat something like an egg for a meal and a shake for a snack or should shakes still be my primary meals?

I go back to my NUT on Wednesday, but thought I would see what I could find out on here.

Be sure to read all the labels. A lot of shakes will have all of their guidelines on them. I got some Protein from GNC only to read, amounts later, that its not formulated for weight loss. ^^;;;; if you're not sure, ask your doc or NUT. They can point you in the right direction.

I do 3 meals of food and my shakes as Snacks. That way I feel like I'm eating more normal.

FYI I had problems with turkey and chicken even if they were moist. I'm 7 weeks out and reheated chicken is just too dry. Ground meats will probably feel the best on ur new little tummy. I bought a package of chicken meatballs from costco, put them in a large ziplock bag in the freezer. I can only get 2 down and I'm stuffed. But they are great to have on hand in a pinch

The Syntrax shakes make pretty good meals and have about 100 calories a serving. I happen to like the nectar double cookie and matrix Oreo flavors, but there are so many other flavors to choose from. The key is to think of even your Snacks as meals. I have 6 meals a day where each is around 125 calories. Two of them are shakes mixed with Water where the others are 3-4 oz of some Protein. Eating small meals every 3 hours helps keep hunger at bay, normalizes the insulin response and increases your metabolism for more efficient calorie burning. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
