Vsg Causes Accelerated Aging?

Recommended Posts

I read a blog last night. (Can't find the link now). But this person was anti-WLS and they stated that the sleeve removes the part of your stomach that produces the hormone HGH and when removed causes accelerated aging.

Is there any truth to this?

If you mean ghrelin, there really isn't a lot of definitve research and a whole lot of guessing right now. Nobody is really sure what ghrelin does.

HGH stands for human growth hormone and it is produced in the brain, so no, we are not losing that.

I don't believe most things I read on the internet. Now that I've lost a lot of weight, I look younger and I feel younger and I get feed back from others about how young I look. So I choose to not believe it unless there is a lot of empirical evidence to support it....

Not scientific evidence, but in most of the before & after pics I've seen, people always look 10 years younger in the after pic ;)

Being 200 lbs overweight will kill you pretty quick too. Just sayin'.....

As already stated HGH is NOT produced in the stomach, ghrelin IS and it is a GH compound, unfortunately I cannot confirm exactly what GH stands for in this context. If like HGH it stands for Growth Hormone I am not sure of the implications.

Some info : https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11600590

Perhaps our misinformed blogger got the two mixed up.

Oh, and BTW, I'd rather be older and thin and otherwise healthy than "young" and fat and have other terrible issues. like diabetes, high BP and cholesterol through the roof

I was going to comment that all the b4 and after pics I see of people they look younger, happier, and healthier ...I'm not quite 6 mo out and feel TONS better/ younger and I think my pics reflect that too...

As to looks...I actually look older than I did because of the weight loss. I used to say the fat kept the wrinkles away...as it turns out, that's true LOL But having the rounded face of a 15 year old isn't necessarily a good thing.

I was always mistaken for early 30s when I decided to have this surgery. It helps to have a 6 year old...people think you are younger than you are. The other day I was talking to a group of mom's at the school and age came up. Several of them said they thought I was "their age". Most of them are a good ten years younger than me, so as I am pushing 50, being mistaken for 40 ain't all bad :P

I see age I didn't see before because of the fat. Smile lines, an ever so tiny jowl forming....worry lines at the eyebrows. These weren't apparent when I was carrying 40 pounds more than I am now. If they get more prominent I'll probably be vain and go fix them :P (Though I do fear that given my luck with complications they'd accidently relocate an eye to my nose). But right now, I'm ok with the changes I see. I'm not 25 :) I don't need to look it. DH says that rubies look silly on young women....I'm hoping he's thinking of a purchase :P one can never have too many rubies LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
