Prepare! Magnesium Citrate Is No Fun!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so it's not so bad either, but man, I'm glad I don't have to have surgery more often. I was prescribed 10 oz. of Magnesium Citrate 24 hours before surgery to "clean my bowels" (yeah, probably TMI). Anyway, first.....IT TASTES AWFUL!!!! I don't care WHAT they flavor it with...it's just plain AWFUL. It says to drink liquid when you take it as well, but man, there's nothing that can help that taste. I chose grape and though drinking grape Propel Zero might help. NOPE.

So, I poured the MC into a glass and filled the remainder of the glass with the Propel hoping this would dilute it and make it a little easier to get down.....NOPE.

So then, I just made myself do it. The glass of MC mixed with Propel and a Trenta Black Iced Tea 1/2 the Water 4 equal (to be specific ;) ) from Starbucks sitting next to it. I made a deal with myself. If I would take 3 large drinks of the MC I could take 2 drinks of the tea. If I did this every 5 min, I could have it down in 30 min. Somehow, some way, I managed to get it done (but not before wanting to vomit on the last swallow). OMG....it was NASTY!

I might be over reacting, and if I'm freaking anyone out, I'm sorry. I just want you to be prepared so you can find something to help you get through it to if they require it of you as well.

Before I started any of this, I made sure to get a few movies from redbox, picked up my scolopene (sp?) patch at the pharmacy, grabbed some propel to mix with my grape & watermelon Protein bullets when I get home, and praise the saits, Charmin was on sale too. :) Just a small tip...grab some Cottonelle w/Aloe cleansing wipes to help with the discomfort.

If this bit of discomfort is a small amount to pay for the benefits of my surgery tomorrow....I'm happy to pay the price.

Good luck to all who are venturing toward their surgery day.

Ugh. I have to drink that crap on Sunday too... I also got grape. I wondered if I should have gotten lemon since there was more rows of that (leading me to believe that was the more popular one so they stocked that one more)

That should help me lose an extra couple pounds! Oh joy.

Good luck with surgery tomorrow!! Let us know how it goes for you!

I am still pre op but I got really bad constipated once while I was pregnant and Dr had me try MC. I got the cherry flavor and I found the trick was to have it extremely cold right out of fridge and over ice. Mixing it with other things just makes it take longer to drink IMO

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
