Anybody Do Any Barefoot Running?

I just finished reading the book "Born to Run". It really made me want to go run an ultramarathon. It also makes me want to order myself some of those minimalist running shoes. I'm really determined to be able to run injury free.

that book has given you the drive/encouragement to move forward with you running/biking

i know you love the biking per other posts - not to mention you and that cool looking bicycle ;)

i envy people like "you"/little jealous too - that can do all that running (marathons) and long bicyle trips - good for you!!!!

i can see you running/biking into the sunset B)

such good exercise - and fun too

how are your thoughts going with the tattoo?

DW still won't let you get that naked lady tatoo, right :( :lol:

My husband is an ultra runner and has progressed to zero drop shoes. It's something you have to work into very slowly to avoid injury. Some love it some don't. The thing that has helped him the most is cross training. He's hoping to do a 100 mile race in a little over a month. So he cross trains on a bike and an eliptigo. I hope to figure out how to enjoy a marathon let alone an ultra! Maybe next year. Good luck!

Me too. I want to run a marathon someday.

I just got some vibrams and I've been trotting around the yard the last few days. Tonight I wore them while doing the elliptical.

Good luck! I did a marathon in Arizona and was passed by a guy running BAREFOOT. it was his 100th marathon running completely barefoot. It was amazing. Of course I was soon passed by a cute little old lady...I want to be as fast as her someday! :)

Me too. I want to run a marathon someday.

I just got some vibrams and I've been trotting around the years the last few days. Tonight I wore them while doing the elliptical.

Would those work with a treadmill? I hate putting on shoes unless they have a good 5 inch heel :P

I once ran a mile barefoot in Alaska in the frost bite foot race. You are highly motivated to move, and to keep it going when you are running on ice :P Perhaps this would be good practice for you????

After my regular run tonight in running shoes, I did a little more barefooted. On the grass it felt great. On the track, not really. But I think it would have felt good with the vibrams. I am already a forefoot striker, not a heel striker, so running barefooted feels natural. I just need to learn to land softer....more knee bend. I'll get there.

I've never ran an organized race, but I've done my share of bike rides. It never ceases to amaze me when I'm 50 miles out and some little old man blows by me on his bike made in 1952.

Went to a sports medicine specialist yesterday. I was wearing my vibrams, and low and behold, so was he. We had a long talk about them. He said he doesn't run barefoot but he does run in the vibrams. He says every Doctor has a different opinion. But he sees a lot of running injuries. And of the ones who were running barefoot or in minimalist shoes, 90% of them either did too much too soon, or continued running in a heel striking fashion. He said there is still that 10% that did everything right and still got hurt, but the percentage of shoed runners who do everything right and still get hurt is much higher. He said if it wasn't for runners he'd be out of business. I must admit I was happy to hear all that.

Then he told me I may possibly have a torn rotator cuff, which was the actual reason for my visit. Not happy to hear that at all.

I wear skeletoes & I have jogged since 2009. (barely--my body is too much for my frame unfortunately) & while I like the minimalist idea, I always end up with sore arches afterwards (did I mention I'm also flat feeted? Lol) but when I jog in regular shoes, I feel like my toenails are being ripped off. Just can't win. I LOVE to jog, though...it was one of my main motivators for doing the surgery--realizing that my body is collapsing under the stress of its own weight & im not willing to give up, resign to the couch & grow old at heart because of it. I'm hoping that post-op & 100# from now, I can enjoy it again. Until then, I'll have to hobble on my prosthetic shoes & multiple bone spurs. :\

I too am a runner (9 half marathons) and I tried to do minimalistic by starting w/ Newtons, but then quickly had injuries; too fast too soon. So now I run in Brooks and they are very light and love them. I ran past a guy the other day and he was fully barefoot, I told him he was brave, I would never run w/ no protection on my feet. I think you will do well w/ Vibrams if you just take your time and train right. I have finally learned that my injuries have come from bad form and now pay very close attention to how I run and it seems to be working. Running is so much fun, I wish everyone could feel that way!

I've done four half marathons and an Ironman in the last year and I don't think I'm ready yet for minimalist shoes yet. I tried them once and since most of my running is on streets, I felt the jarring on my feet a lot more than my Asics. Good luck with them though.

I bought a pair of vibrams about 2 yrs ago but unfortunately I bought a size that was too small *sigh*. Back when I would run on my home treadmill I would run barefoot. I'm not brave enough to do it outside because we live in a area where we have those huge prickly things and they've popped all 3 tires on my jogging stroller. I had to get the tire reinforced but my innocent dog sometimes gets them in her paws. I've been thinking about buying minimalist running shoes but as far as walking on the trails barefoot..... that's not a option. I currently wear cheap shoes with very thin sole shoes and gosh I hate when I step on a rock lol

I did 4 miles hiking in the national forest today in my vibrams and I really enjoyed it. No problems at all. Gonna try some light jogging in them tomorrow on the track.

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...
