My NUT appointment lasted about 1 hour-ish. She went over portion sizes, all the food groups, what foods/vitamins I should be eating before surgery to prepare as well as post op diet. Talked about getting in all the Protein and what order I should eat in. She gave me a couple of booklets one with basic food group stuff and one with post op diet guidelines... Hope this helps :)

Thanks :) I was kinda nervous, just wondering. I have the NUT appointment, stress test and the egd to go.. then they will send my stuff off to insurance company. Do you know how long it could take for the insurance company to get back with me? Praying I can have my surgery in December.

Welcome to the site! My first visit with the NUT primarily involved Q & A regarding history of health, weight loss attempts, family health, exercise, my current eating habits, etc. and also began with weighing in (height and size)... I also was directed to begin maintaining food logs to record any and everything I put into my mouth, as well as instructed to begin taking Vitamin D (Caltrate) and Multivitamins daily. I had 5 visits with the NUT.

In between this time, I have had to also complete a pyschosocial assessment during my 3rd month visits with the NUT and had a follow-up with the psychiatrist, then the last visit was with the clinic's Medical Director who then reviewed my case; the Medical Director then submitted the pre-auth to my insurance on 11/8/12 and I was approved by insurance on 11/9.....so happy that I am scheduled for surgery on 12/3/12.

I have BCBS of TX and it took them exactly 3 weeks and 2 days to approve... But from many posts I have seen here, lots of people have gotten approval between 1 and 3 days... I think my case was the exception rather than the rule. When My paperwork was submitted to insurance, my Dr. Office told me it usually takes 1 week but the insurance would have 30 days to approve or deny...

Sorry' date=' how long for insurance company to approve or deny? ***[/quote']

Insurance approval (or denial) is different for everyone on these forums......have you read your insurance company's criteria or requirements?

That's awesome that u were approved that quickly! I'm hoping I don't have to do that many NUT appointments BC its $180 everytime and that's with insurance! Hopefully UHC will approve me that quick :)

Ya I have, my BMI is high so I will automatically be approved, just wondering when Dr submits it, how long it would take just for insurance to say yes. We shall see I guess.

My insurance is PreferredOne in Minneapolis, MN. My insurance has no "hoops" as long as the surgery is being done t a designated "Center of Excellence" ad only required a statement of medical necessity from that clinic; there is a website that lists all of the hospitals across the U.S. that are either fully, or partially accredited. If te hospital is not a designated COE, then that's where the hoops came in..... BMI 35 w/comorbidities or 40 w/no comorbidities.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
