Cobra Coverage

Recommended Posts

Hi all im new here. I been lurking for a while and finally had the courage to type up whats been going on. So i was recently fired from my job and when i say recently i mean last week wed, im happy im not there any more because my job was beyond stressful, but it has happen at a very bad time. I was just in the process of my first consult with the doctor which is going to be nov 30th my insurance ends nov 16. I do have the option of Cobra and everything will continue like i didnt even lose my insurance. So whats the problem you ask? the cost... for me alone with medical is 537 a month, now with a one income home i'm just feeling so guilty. Do i feel that we can make the payments? Yes its doable but its such a stretch. So i wanted to get some honest feedback, especially from people who had the surgery.

Should i do go ahead and take the chance and pay from the insurance, keep in mind i don't know if i will get approved from aetna(cobra coverage) running the risk of paying the premium and might not even get approved...

But i could get approved which makes the cost of the payments each month worth it. Either way my husband supports me but i know he would be stretched out. I'm also looking into medicaid in VA because i heard they might cover it also but then again thats a might.

Help me with your honest opinions, if you had to pay that amount for insurance to get your sleeve would you do it? Is it worth it?

Hi Evelyn, I was just told that I'm losing my job & my employer is paying in full for 1 month if Cobra ins. If Aetna has approved me do you know if I will need approval frim Cobra as well? I was told that I needed to send was weight history for 2 yrs (I got everything else done) and I would be approved by Aetna.just wondering how Cobra works..

From what i was told everything stays the same like you never lost insurance so if aetna approved you then your approved. I do have a question for you about the 2yr weight history that aetna requests. Does it matter if you were not as big 2yrs ago as now. For me i was always overweight but not a bmi 40, does that affect being approved??

You wont have to resubmit everything again. I had the same situation. I was approved before losing the job by Anthem and it was approved within hours by Cobra. The benefits wont change. You will be fine. :-)

I wasnt that big before I had my son. I was 200-205lbs back in 2008. Then I had my son in 2010 and thats when I gained more... I still got approved.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
