My Strange Side Affect

Recommended Posts

So after surgery I've had a VERY strange side affect from the surgery. It had to do with my sleep. So every night for the first week I would toss and turn and every time I'd move from one side to another I believed I was making a bid on eBay. What was I bidding on I have no idea. The worse part of it was there was a song playing on repeat which was call me maybe. And I don't know infant one has heard that song but its annoying as all hell. I was very upended and have been shaking in a corner.

I had really weird, vivid dreams maybe the first week. I was so freaked out I didn't want to sleep. Cant remember any of the dreams in detail, thank goodness! My surgeon said it was a side effect of the anesthesia and pain meds, which I stopped taking immediately after our conversation.

In the past I was taking a pain pill and I would have vivid dreams of my front teeth sliding out and there was no end to it....That was when I stopped taking the pain pill. Scared the hell out of me.....:)

This is funny because I had a really vivid dream the other night! First, I had a nightmare and I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep for almost two hours because I was so stressed out and feeling down. What did I used to do when I was stressed out and down? Stress eat! So I fell back asleep and had a really, REALLY realistic dream that I ate half a large pizza, half a serving of buffalo wings, and a serving of chicken strips. After I ate all of that, which I did in like two seconds, I looked around at all of the carnage and thought "Oh crap! I had surgery. This is going to hurt!" and at that instance, the food bolus hit my stomach and it was the worse pain ever! It woke me up!

The funny thing is the next day I was talking to one of my co-workers who specializes in substance abuse treatment and she laughed at me and said that her clients usually have really vivid "using dreams" right after they quit their drug of choice. It just goes to show that food addictions are real!

I know it isn't funny.... but what a weird thing to dream about!

My vote is that maybe it is time to consider stopping any pain meds before the Rabbit and Cheshire Cat show up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
