My Daughter Will Miss My Belly But Wants To Keep Me Longer

Recommended Posts

Hi, my names Rick, i'm 40 years old and have 2 wonderful kids a 10 year old boy and a 5 year old girl. I weigh 370 lbs and am 5'5" tall. I am a professional Paramedic/Supervisor. When my wife of 12 years left me in April, I kept the kids because I am better at taking care of them then she ever was, I started thinking of what would happen to my kids if I died from health problems related to my weight, and I decided I can't take that chance anymore so I decided it was time to do what was necessary. I am scheduled for sleeve surgery on December 10. My daughter loves to hug my big belly but we talked and she says she will be OK with me getting rid of my belly if it means she can keep me longer, and I will be able to play with her more. I think kids are the best motivator in the world.

aww, that's sweet. She'll still be able to hug that belly as it's melting away so it won't be as traumatic for her as it would be if your belly suddenly vanished in a day. When you get to goal weight she'll be loving the new energetic you and she'll love how she can wrap her arms around you. It is wonderful to hear of an engaged father raising his children. They are lucky to have you.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
