Dallas, Texas Sleevers! !

Recommended Posts

I'm currently attending one in Frisco. It's a great inspiration to me. Each group will have its own personality so if you don't like this one find another group.

Best advice ever! I currently go to 3-4 different groups, and each one is very different. I'm moving across the Metroplex and will be looking for new ones too.

Hi Rosemary,

You will probably get a better response on this if you start a new topic in the surgeons area. You can also try using search to see if you can find anything that might have been posted about Dr Barker in the past. I am betting there's something.

Good luck. I haven't heard anything either way although I have heard of him, probably from commercials.

I am a dallas sleever and would love to find a group or mentor or buddy to share this experience and get some motivation as well as give.

If you ask people in the WLS community who are the best doctors in the DFW area Barker does NOT make the list. In fact, I've heard more than once to avoid him.

The DFW area has one of the best WLS communities in the country. In my signature is a link to a list of all the support groups here and I highly recommend you check out the patient led groups (like After the Cut or thinspiration) as well as the hospital/doctor groups. You won't regret it.

Thank you! Actually had a consult with him today. He walked in wearing shorts and tennis shoes. Looked at my 20 pages of paperwork and said, "do you have any questions for me?" Never once asked me one question! Had to pay $170 for his "consult" which lasted about 10 minutes. Ridiculous!! So not impressed. Waste of my time and money!

I had my surgery done at barkers and had a good experience. My surgery was done by Dr. Hodges and she was great. Sorry about your experience, rosemary..i saw you are self pay...Barker himself exclusively handles self pays on his own nowadays from what i heard.

I'm in Plano and could use some help. I can't seem to get motivated to loose the last 17 lbs!!! A support group would probably help. Thanks!!

Here's a list of DFW area that includes both doctor/hospital run and patient run groups. There are A LOT of people in the Plano area (from days to years out of surgery) that participate in these. They're free and I highly recommend visiting a few. There is a meeting tonight at 6pm at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano - several friends and I will be attending.

I attended the support group at Plano Presby and thought it was a great group of motivated people. I haven't had time to get back, though. Good luck!

There's the monthly Baylor Plano meeting nest Wednesday. If you are really struggling, you may consider the weekly lifestyle change group ran by Dr Ashmore. It's fantastic. You have to have met with him first, so if you are interested, come to Wednesday night and get the info!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
