Do Non-Sleevers Eat This Much Protein?

Recommended Posts

I didn't read all the replies' date=' but I read potatoes not prozac last month, and he recommends a lot of Protein ( up to 41 g) at every Meal to keep sugar addiction and depression at bay. I'm eating 25g/ meal as a goal now, PRE surgery.[/quote']

I think 25-30 grams a meal is fine. Your body cannot process any more than that at one time, probably more like 23 grams at a time. Either the extra Protein passes through you or gets stored as fat for later use.

Hang on....why would we want to store anything as fat for later use? Doesn't that go against the principle of trying to lose fat, not store it?

How much did you eat pre-op?

12oz steak has 96g of Protein.

12oz of shrimp has 97.2g

12 med chicken wings is 102g

Pre-op I could easily eat a 20oz steak' date=' or a 12 oz steak & 6oz of shrimp. That's +- 150g Protein. And that's just 1 meal.

My son can drink a gallon of milk in a day, that's 130g protein.

[/quote']

Did you get the Quest bars? If so, are they any good? What's the carb count?

Thanks!

From my understanding is, Protein helps us retain our muscle while we are burning fats.

We will lose our muscle while losing weight if we don't have enough protein.

We wanted to lose fats instead of muscle because if you have more muscle, you burn up more calories.

And more protein also prevent hair from dropping. :)

Yes, that is true. But is that necessary when we've lost all our far and maintaining?

There was a study or two that i read that proved that extra grams of Protein will be stored or pass thought the body if consumed in excess at one time. As an extreme, you do not want try to consume all required 80 grams of Protein in one meal because of the body's inability to process more than 20-25 grams at once. Don't ask me for the studies because it was from a while ago. I do not remember where I read it from. The best approach to manage hunger, insulin levels and feel satisfied is to split the protein up over 5-6 meals a day, preferably between 20-25 grams per mini meal. This is not actually that hard to do because most 3 oz of Proteins as well as solid Proteins fall into that golden range of opportunity,

I meant to say "3oz of solid proteins as well as 8 oz servings of good quality protein drinks; either RTD or your own blender mix"

They are sitting at home waiting on me to pick them up. Right next to my chia seeds from azchia and my hemp Protein from Amazon and my new bicycle. Unfortunately I haven't seen the house in almost a month. And I keep ordering stuff

I don't think it works that way. Protein is first used to repair cells and make them function. Only after that is done are they used for energy when all the carbs have been used up. We eat so little that I seriously doubt anything is left over for fat storage.

I find it hard to get Protein in. I am still pre-op. I don't care for milk, meat, or cheese. When I was tracking my meals I was only averaging 30 grams of Protein per day. So I am supplementing with shakes. Seems I may always be on Protein Shakes

Me too mostly. I don't mind cheese and seafood but I get tired of them both sometimes. I've done Protein Shakes for years because I get tired of chewing and don't always have time to sit and eat. I think the liquid diet (if I can still do almond milk) will be the easiest part for me.

You get tired of chewing?

You may find out later that shakes will not satisfy you as your sleeve starts to heal. Dense Protein is the best, but you can also eat Beans. We just made some navy bean and ham Soup. There is a gal here somewhere who had the best recipes for homemade protein packed Soups. She was called the Soup lady or something like that. The flavors are so varied that it would be hard to get tired of them.

Don't forget eggs! You can throw different meats, cheeses and veggies in eggs. eggs are great for leftovers. I once threw bean sprouts from some Chinese place in the eggs. Tasted like egg foo young.

Yes, I like smooth foods the chewing starts to hurt my jaw after a while. I know it's weird but my kids are that way too so at least now all these years later I know it is not just me. ;)

Soup...that's a good idea. I hardly ever even consider soup. I think I'll poke around for some good recipes. Thanks for that suggestion!

The body process/ absorbs about 5.5g per hour in a 150 pound individual.Person of about 200 pounds plus minus 7.6g.

Interesting thing about whey Protein is it leaves the body within two hours after taking it.So taking more than say 21g at a time is a waste for most.

The high Protein we have to take is to make sure we get enough every day.It is better to have some form of protein every 3 hours.

Different Proteins are digestedand absorbed at different rates though. That is why it is also better to eat/drink different types of protein during the day.

There is different opinions on how much protein a healthy normal 150 pound person needs but it ranges between 50 and 60g per day.

Same here! I ate a LOT more protein before my surgery. I have been tracking my nutrition for years and there is no comparison.

I can only speak for myself, but I've always had a very healthy diet. Never fast food, junk food or sweets. My whole issue was QUANTITY. I'm eating much less now, therefore less protein. Before, I'd eat a 20 oz Porterhouse with NO problem (even after the pile of chicken wings). I can only eat 4-6 oz of steak now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
