Surgery Is Monday - Mourning Food

Recommended Posts

My surgery is this coming Monday, November 19. I am not nervous yet. Right now I am just mourning food. I know I will miss it so much. I went for my final preop appointment yesterday and my surgery was nearly cancelled because I had gained weight. I have an autoimmune disease (AS) and am in an active flare for which I have been taking high dose prednisone (50 mg taper) since August. Prednisone always packs the pounds on me. Anyway, I had lost the 5 pounds I needed to get the surgery scheduled but since scheduling, I had gained 10 lbs. The surgeon understood my circumstance and agreed to do the surgery still but the NP at his office made me feel totally horrible! I am eating as clean as possible until my surgery to hopefully lose a few pounds. I am now off prednisone so hopefully that will kick start some loss before Monday.

im sorry to hear! at least they are still doing your surgery :) you can still enjoy your food and shrink your liver and lose tons of weight while doing so! GLAD you are off the mds. chicken and fish taste.so.GOOD! use your seasonings (and judgement) and make a nice stir fry. with low carb veggies. broccoli is my FAVORITE. i miss food so much! i am on liquids until the 21st so i feel your pain. but you can still enjoy your good just wicked healthy choices. fill up on that Protein instead of Pasta carbs and rice. good luck to you hope surgery is nice and smooth and successful for you!!!

So happy your off the prednisone, that pill is evil......Keep doing what your doing and it is normal to mourn food....But it's only temporary and later on you can still have a smaller portion, but most likely won't want it....Your body will look fabulous..... :)

I also mourned food, but a video on YouTube was my inspiration. I had surgery yesterday and I don't know if this is the case for everyone, but my cravings are GONE. It is bizarre really. I don't want to sound cheesy or throw out a cliche, but I feel like a different person today. For the first time since I can remember, food isn't controlling me or consuming my every thought. They say this isn't a miracle cure, but for me, it has miraculously cured my brain. I'm not mourning food any more and that is a relief!!! Keep your head up and stay strong!

@ mezanne1401 may I ask...what YouTube video did you watch that inspired you?

I searched gastric sleeve before and after and one of the videos that came up said something like 100 before and after pics. That is the video I would watch!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
