FOR MEN: Bands of Steel Sound Off!

Recommended Posts

:biggrin1: Ladies, I love women. Oh boy, do I love womenJ. So please, I beg you not to misunderstand this posting. Your support is phenomenal. But as a guy, I need to also read/hear more men speak out about their experiences. I know we’re on here. We just don’t verbalize things as freely. So, here it goes!

MEN – it’s time to be strong, and report in. We need to hear from strong, victorious men who decided to TAKE CHARGE OF THEIR LIVES and be banded. Tell us about the obstacles you face – good, bad, or indifferent. From a guy’s point of view, give us some tips to help along the way. We are the bands of steel, so speak up and be counted. I’ll receive my band of steel tomorrow morning. :shade:

Ask your questions and I'll be more than happy to give you my answers.

I for one have no problem expressing myself and I know of a few other men who also have no problems.

I could write a book and still miss your concerns, so let us know what your concerns are (from your male perspective) and I hope you will get your answers from a male perspective.

Hi, Darrell,

It is good to hear from another guy. It seem that most of the e-mails are done by the fairer sex, which is not all that bad.

I was banded 6/29/04 at age of 72 and everything has gone very well and right on schedule.

Good Luck,

Dave T.

Thanks Guys. Well I'm on the other side. I was banded on Tuesday; 17 Oct 06. Everything went pretty well. My doc indicated that I was "very tight." He used the largest band possible. I really don't know what that means, or if that's good or bad. He said during the first six weeks, this should help me loose weight pretty quickly. Right now, I just want to feel stronger. I seem to be healing really well. I can just about walk normal, but I'm still pretty swollen. The pain wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I only used extra strength tolenol, instead of the vicodin extra strength. I"m not hungry, but I'm so very weak. Since my surgery, I've only been able to eat small amounts of broth, Water, and 1 sugar free popcycle. I can't seem to get much down before feeling full with a great deal of preasure in my upper abdomin. I don't want to over do it - throw up. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to loosen up. Is this normal? Also this morning, I noticed after taking my medication I had a lump in my throat. Is this what you call tightness, or a sign of being full? When can, or should I try to take in liquid protien? Will that help with my strength? I'm really weak. Thanks!

Darrell...:help:

PS Tired Ole Man - thanks for the advice. I will also post to the main board...

I was banded last Friday, the 13th of October. By 3:00 in the afternoon I felt great and was ready to go home but they made me stay overnight because I have apnea. Checked out of the hospital at 9:30 Saturday morning and after a 3-hour ride I was sitting at my son's football game by 1:00. Rode home that same evening. I have had no problems with pain, nausea or swallowing. I went back to work on Monday. I'm sticking to my doctor's orders for 2 weeks of liquids (followed by 2 weeks of mushies) and have not had any problems with hunger. So far, it's been pretty easy.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
