Nervous About Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

This is the beginning of my second week. I've been drinking Protein Drinks from store, Jello (samll amounts), chicken & beef broth. My first week I didn't feel like drinking much cuz I hurt. I got alot of my drinks from the office I went to prior to surgery.

I too am in the beginning of my second week. I have been drinking the EAS Advantege shakes for at least one meal per day for the last year and half, so I am not minding the shakes. I can't stand Jello, so that is out! I have missed chewing. I love ice so I fill a glass with crushed ice then add diet juice or Water and eat the ice after I finish drinking. I just keep thinking how I am one day closer to surgery and it keeps me on target. I have also lost 5 lbs since last Wednesday, so that has been very motivating as well! You can do it! We will be here if you need encouragement as well!!!

I'm on day 11 of my 2 week liquid diet. I thought it would be more of a struggle than it has been. Mine is pretty strict. Only allowed 5 8 oz. glasses of 2% milk (I drink skim or 1%) with Carnation Instant Breakfast no sugar added. Then I can have V8, Diet V8, Crystal Light, any non-calorie beverage (not including sodas), and up to 2 cups of broth.

First few days were better than I expected. And even when I started to get sick of the chocolate or vanilla options, I started to experiment with the spices in my cabinet. Since we are near the holidays and I know it's highly unlikely I will get to have pumpkin pie, I started adding pumpkin pie spice, some extra nutmeg and cinnamon to my vanilla and it really tasted close to pumpkin pie! I also have Apple Pie spice that I have tried. The chocolate isn't too bad, and I grabbed some ready to drink bottles to put in my drawer at work. Those I find best to pour over ice and drink as chocolate milk. If you get tired of the consistency of the "milk", try adding some crushed ice and put it in a blender (or bullet) and mix it. Gives it a thicker consistency that resembles a milkshake and really helps to fill you up.

That's about the extent of my knowledge. I will let you know, it hasn't been easy. My hubby and I drove 4 hours south to stay with my sister. On the way we stopped so he could get lunch at Wendy's. I stood there reading the menu and there were MAYBE 2 items on that menu I could have. After trying to convince myself that a small chili would be ok because it's mostly Protein, I heard myself order "2 1% Chocolate Milks and a large unsweet tea". Hubby said he was proud of me and thought that if I cheated now in the middle of my liquid diet before the surgery, we were going to be in trouble post surgery being successful. There were other obstacles throughout the weekend, as we all then attending our cousin's wedding. Yep, cake, cupcakes, spinach dip & chips, etc. Again, somehow I managed to make it through with only unsweet tea.

Good luck! You can DO THIS!! There's a saying I wrote on a post-it....maybe it will help you too. Nothing tastes as good as Thin feels.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
