5 Days Post-Op And A Little Past Puree Stage?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so im 5 days post op, and will be seeing my surgeon, and NUT on wed. the 14th, Im still in the puree stage, but yesterday while drinking the juice out of a minestrone Soup i did eat a bit of the veggies not much more then a teaspoon, but needed some texture after days of pureed stuff. Today, i did end up eating some cream of chicken rice, probly about 3 oz so not a whole lot, but i didn't strain it first so i did chew the rice really finely and and also finely chewed the little tiny bit of chicken in there. I did eat slower both times then i normally do and im holding it down great, maybe a burp or 2 during eating but not feeling bad at all.

My question is, am i doing harm? while i am a great cook, im not too creative with pureed recipies, i have just about ran out of cottage cheese, and am sick of pudding and Jello. anyone care to chime in?

You could keep pushing yourself and have no problems. But once you do cross over that line and create a problem, it will be too late, and their will be no warning sign telling you before then. The rules and schedules doctors set may be conservative, but they are that way for a reason. They would rather error on the side of safety than gamble with your health and well being. Most people are not even allowed purreed foods until 2 weeks post op. So why push yourself? You'll be eating regular foods before you know it, just less of them. You've got the rest of your life to eat. These few weeks are about setting yourself on a healthy path.

Personally? Nah. I had a ton of problems finding things I could hold down after surgery, so I got permission to bump up my schedule. After a while, I've started to let my body tell me what does and doesn't work just so I can get in the nutrition I'm supposed to. Trust me, if your body doesn't like what you just did, you *will* know!

Butter's got a good point, too. Use your brain. I don't think mushy canned veggie matter will do anything, though. That's just me.

This sounds scary to me, my doc does not allow any of his patients to have food after surgery for 2 weeks just shakes, broth, popcycles. He says that YOU MUST give your stomach time to heal, if a small grain or anything get caught in between the sutures it is a major problem pls, pls be careful. This is no joke

i cant tell if you if its bad or not. but i was sleeved the same day as you and it terrifies me to think of real food at the moment. my surgeon was very strict and specific liquids for two weeks post op. i don't even have a follow up with him until the 19th. but every surgeon and office is different. if you are going to experiment i would suggest not doing it with rice (esp because of the starch).you can always call the the nurses line if you are worried but i would def stick to the plan at this point :) good luck!!!

OP that sounds like what I did and I'm still alive lol I started eating soft foods a week after surgery and didn't have any problems. I chewed my food to a puree and some docs want their patients to eat regular food asap. Not all docs require a post op diet filled with Protein Shakes and baby food :) OP you will be fine but if you're scared talk to your NUT.

Just to clarify, im not eating all different kinds of foods, there was a bit of rice in the cream of chicken rice, and small stewed veggies in the minestrone (not the whole Soup, but one chopped bit of stewed celery and maybe a bit of stewed lettuce), not every meal its just been twice in the last 2 days... My surgeons plan is puree phase after leaving the hospital until 1 week out appointment when i would then be moved to soft foods if i wasnt haveing too much of a prob with the purees or just getting stuff down.

I'm not asking if i should just give up on puree and start the soft foods phase, im not trying to. just trying to be cautious of the fact that i may be moving too fast and trying to make sure that i'm not causing damage. I do plan on calling my surgeon tomorrow, but been waiting since its the weekend. (also a bit curious if anyone has been in the same place)

Edit: Last bit... i do want to add that im not forcing any food... I feel like i've been really good about listening to my body and going really slow until i could get a grasp on how its going down.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
