Protein Shakes: Rtd Vs Homemade

Recommended Posts

I'm 3 months postop on tuesday. Up until today i've used the RTD shakes from costco or Chike powder. I decided it was time to make my own. I used vanilla whey, a tsp of white choc pudding, 2 tbspns Fage Yogurt, 1/4 cup blueberries & filtered Water. Holy toledo! Tastes great but what a diff feeling it is in my sleeve. I've barley made a dent in it and I'm full. The RTD's I can guzzle in 5 minutes. Hmmm...interesting!!

Just thought i'd share bcs I know that some of you only use RTD's also. Maybe the homemade version will help me stay fuller longer?

Maybe all the Fiber from the blueberries? Sounds yummy, and I bet it was a nice shade of purple :)

Sounds yummy! I prefer homemade over RTD's any day. I think you're getting fuller faster, because there is more 'volume' to the shake...whereas the RTD's are thinner, and so they take up 'less volume' in your stomach, and move through the digestion process quicker. Homemade shakes have the best of both worlds....deeffinitely better tasting, and keeps you fuller longer. (But I have to admit, RTD's can still be good in a pinch!)

Yes! It's gorgeous!! And I only used 2 tblspns of blueberrles. I think it's bcs this is more dense than the RTD. I feel like a grownup drinking at the adults table. ;-). I feel kinda silly that I didn't make my own until now. I'm really lazy in the kitchen.

I got myself one of those individual blenders, where you blend right in the drinking cup. Just stick a straw in, and I'm feelin' pretty 'grown up' myself! B) heh heh.

I went through 2 magic bullets!! I must be too rough on them or something, LOL. I just bought the Ninja Pulse. It's one of their more affordable models, and it comes with 3 large travel cups, plus a large blender bowl. I highly recommend. You can make SNOW with the frickin' thing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
