Just Getting Started

Recommended Posts

:) Hi Everyone ~ I am new to this. Because of my weight my knees & legs no longer want to support me. So after some research and talking to a few people I am going to try to the Gastric Sleeve. As long as it is done through a "Center of Excellence" he work insurance will pay for it in full. I was trying to find information in line (as I have not been home in 2 weeks - between being hospitalized and now In rehabilitation. Monday I will make more calls - though not much I can set uo not knowing when I will sent home.

I have been overweight since I was in 3rd or forth grade. The thing I found I think is odd it the period of time they can have.

I am eager & terrified of getting this started but, it has to be done.Karen

Good luck! You can actually do a lot by just making the phonecall to the drs office. The were very helpful and informative and worked around everything I had going on as well!

Thank you. I am nervous etc about this. But, I know I need to have the surgery or I can never get my knees "fixed" or I will end up having a heart attack or stroke. I want to feel better about me in general. :) Since I am in rehab & cannot do much anyway, So hopefully by the time I can get to call the doctor I will be pretty informed

I had the same problem with my knees. I have DJD in both knees. I was sleeved on Sept. 12 and I have NOT had any problems with my knees. I feel great about that. Having surgery was the best decision I've made for myself.

I would start with the insurance co to find out what centers are in your area. Also check your local hospital.

Good luck with your journey.

I am already going with the insurance sort of. I know from research that the insurance from where I work - if it is done at a "bariatric center of excellence" they will pay the procedure in total. Just tried to access the insurance web address but it is giving me fits & I will have call them tomorrow. I do know there are at least 2 centers in the area. So once I get out of rehab and can move a little.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
