While chewing you are sucking air into your tummy and creating stomach juices. It really isn't that bad I had the lapband and haven't had gum in over 5 years, you won't miss it.

I had never heard that you couldn't chew gum. I am a little over 5 months post op and have chewed sugar free gum the whole time. I am down 75 lbs and i don't believe it has hurt me any. I dont plan to stop now.

One of the main reasons I read was in case you swallow it. I had to laugh, I'm an adult, and I don't think I've swallowed gum in years, I don't think I'll have an issue accidentally swallowing it in the future. Also, I have read the same thing about getting gas into your stomach. The same goes for straws, they say no straws because you can swallow air and become uncomfortable. I say once you are post op, try it! Everyone is different, you won't know if it is okay for yourself until you try it. Also, discuss it with your surgeon, and if there are risks, weight them for yourself. I will try straws and gum again, since my stomach won't EXPLODE from doing either activity, in my opinion, it is a risk worth trying ;)

It is the swallowing thing. Gum stuck in a new tummy healing = bad news!!

I have been chewing daily since 3 months out. Orbit white bubble mint. My fav. Just make sure it's sugar free cause gums like bubblelicius are nothing but sugar. (My old favorite lol)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
