Caroline G 25 Posted November 10, 2012 After over a year of planning, my surgery is scheduled for 12/11. I am so excited that I don't even care that I can't eat during the entire Christmas season. (I figure it is probably better anyways so I am not constantly eating and can focus in my new eating habits.) But it also means that I need to tell more people than I planned to about my surgery because they will be questioning why I am not eating. I just don't want to hear other people's opinions and biases. And neither my Mom nor my husband will let me skip any of these Christmas events. Also, I have to tell my work, coworkers, and clients next that I will be out a few weeks. And I am having trouble putting together what I want to say and how to answer their questions. Of the people I have told so far, some are very, very supportive and others have given me a weird reaction or tried to talk me out of it. Does anyone have any experiences they can share? Thanks, Caroline
rainbows 35 Posted November 10, 2012 You just say you are having surgery! I can say it is to fix a hernia because its partially the truth. And why not just say it? You have already made up your mind right?
MrsDwD 12 Posted November 10, 2012 Hi Caroline, I too have gotten mixed reviews (and opinions) from family and friends... what I am seeing is that I get a lot of cheers and support from those who have struggled with their weight over the years and wished they were able to select WLS as an option. Also, I get some of those frowned looks from others who are relatively healthy, health and wellness junkies, or thin already etc. ....they seem to think that I should be able to "focus" and manage my weight without a surgical procedure. Who cared what others think/say....you have to be comfortable with your decision. I've learned how to manage taking in the opinions of others and rather choose to just be happy and positive with my own decision. Finally, I've still got to inform my supervisor that I will be out do to "abdominal" surgery ....that's all I will be dislosing to my employer. I am waiting to speak to my nurse/scheduler on Monday to select my December surgery date. Wishing you the best!!
Caroline G 25 Posted November 11, 2012 Yes, I have definitely made my mind up and there is no changing it. If my family couldn't talk me out of it, nobody can! I just don't want to hear about it from other people..
