First week liquids..clear or other... help

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am a bit concerned, my doc says liquid for just a few days before the surgery,(depending on your BMI) and I guess I understand that after placing over 4,000 bands he knows how much is really needed. But for post op apparently it is ok to be on full liquids in less than a week. You can blend Soups, smoothies etc, just have to be sure it is not chunky at all. Sounds good, but so ,many of yoy talk about Clear Liquids for 2 weeks!! and then full for another two?

Anyone out there, especilly Dr. R in Mexico patients know? If you did full liquids after a few days how did yoy feel? Any problems at all?:help: :help:

Thank you!

I was on full liquids by the time I left the hospital. They had me drink some carnation instant Breakfast before I could be discharged. When I got home I also had yogurt, pudding, and creamy Soups and I had no problem tolerating them. Granted the first week out I had no appetite so I was lucky to get down 1/2 a pudding cup at a time and I would feel very full, but about a week after I was banded my appetite returned and I could eat larager portions. But overall I had no issues with full liquids.

I was on full liquids starting day 4 post-op. The first week I could care less about eating. Definitely not normal for me. I got full on 1/4 cup of Jello. But now I'm at Day 10 and on full liquids. I have 5 more days until soft foods. I can't wait! I'm getting tired of liquids. But if I make whatever I'm eating too thick my body tells me. So liquids it is for a few more days.

It helps me to drink a hot tea in the morning. Unfortunately my appetite has returned with a vengeance! Kind of a bummer. I liked it better when I wasn't hungry. I guess I understand now why people say that this beginning time is about healing and not weight loss.

I'm in the same boat Cat. The appetite coming back does totally stink. It's funny - I read your blog and you and I have a lot in common. Our age, the shoulder pain, the port incision drainage, getting hungry every two hours on the Soup, etc. Although I'm not allowed mashed potatoes on liquids, so I have total potato envy! lol.

I was on liquids for 10 days and then progressed to mushies for one week and on to normal foods. Each doctor has different rules they have you follow. The important thing is that you follow what your doctor has regimented for you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
