Exercise may actually suppress your appetite, two new studies suggest

Exercise actually decreases your appetite, so the urge to snack after a workout may be all in your head, experts suggest.

By Lindsey Emery, pancakes, or maybe even a burger and fries. What they don’t want? To not eat anything.

And yet, a few recent studies found that moderate intensity aerobic training could actually decrease your appetite or increase your feelings of fullness or satiety. Strange, right? Previous research has shown that people who exercise often reward themselves with food, increasing overall calorie consumption, and often sabotaging their weight loss goals. So, what gives?

Breakfast and not holding back when you start to feel full.

“I’m pretty certain the average person greatly overestimates the number of calories burned during physical activity,” adds Braun. “Running 40 minutes at a 9 min/mile pace burns about 450 calories, and there are 500 calories in a Starbucks Venti Mocha Frappucino (with whole milk and whipped cream). So it’s incredibly easy to negate the weight loss effects of exercise.”

The fix: Nix food rewards — treat yourself to a Redbox flick instead — and write down everything you eat into your iPhone for a week. Studies show that simply logging your meals can make you eat less. Don’t skip the gym either, says Kym Guelfi, associate professor at The University of Western Australia, and co-author of the Metabolism study. “Exercise gives you benefits that dieting alone cannot, such as increased fitness, decreased stress, and increased muscle mass, which helps you burn more calories and fat at rest.”

Absolutely - and dont underestimate the value of a hobby!!!! When I am in the middle of an intense project, I actually have to set alarms to go drink Water and eat!

Don't laugh but I do swordsmanship - I am a LARP! but it gets me out, I get to be aggressive and work out for hours and hours not even notice. I get to the field at noon and we leave at dark...I would do it every day if I could draw a paycheck from it, lol.

Find something you love, and it will replace your desire for food.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
