KLNorrod 7 Posted November 8, 2012 I recently had my surgery. I'm not even a month out yet. I'm currently eating soft foods right now. I know I'm still too early to eat red meat and pork, but when I'm able to start eating dinner with my family again. Can I eat red meat and pork? My doctor (who seems to be EXTREMELY strict compared to everyone elses' doctor on this forum) basically told me no red meat or pork for atleast a year. This seems alittle insane to me. He said it's hard to digest and it's very unhealthy. I understand that a pound of bacon is no longer acceptable, but I really don't see anything wrong with eating a small hamburger with my family this summer. What is everyone else being told about red meat and pork?
Aaron in Tulsa 147 Posted November 8, 2012 I'll be cleared after 4 weeks for all meats. Ground beef at least 90% lean, sirloin, bottom round roast, pork tenderloin, lean pork chops, etc.
Pinky Green 260 Posted November 8, 2012 I was told I could eat anything except seeds, nuts and popcorn after a month. Those have to wait for 6 months. You might want to go by what your doctor said - but pork tenderloin is very low in fat and lean. I don't see why he doesn't want you to eat that.
GeauxForIt 659 Posted November 8, 2012 6-9 months before trying steak but I can have lean ground beef (a hamburger) after 8 weeks. Not sure about pork bc I don't like it!
Butterthebean 8,146 Posted November 8, 2012 I've been eating pork and beef since I was 2 months out. Eat it everyday. I hate chicken. I don't see what the problem is. If I get ground beef, I get the extra lean, but other than that I don't worry about it. I may go eat a ham steak right now in your honor. 5 Webchickadee, happilysleeved, jodir and 2 others reacted to this
VSGJean 68 Posted November 8, 2012 I've had beef and I'm almost 7 weeks out. I've read where some people can't tolerate beef or pork. Just remember not to over do it.
barbi1281 112 Posted November 8, 2012 I'm pretty sure it all depends on your doctor and how well you're healing... I'm 3 weeks out (yes I'm an anomaly) and I've been given the clearance to eat any kind of meat as long as it's lean and I chew, chew, chew. I've had pork tenderloin, steak, various types of fish, chicken, turkey, and ham and no problems. I have a sleeve buddy who had the same doc and she said he made her wait a bit longer for solids so I know it definitely depends on your body also.
IsB 209 Posted November 8, 2012 I'm out a week and 96% lean ground beef has been on the menu given to me by my NUT.

What is everyone else being told about red meat and pork? I asked my nutritionist specifically about steak (filet mignon because it is the most tender with lowest fat). She said 6 months for steak. I did not ask about ground beef but I would think that would be acceptable as soon as meats are allowed??
Threetimesacharm 1,400 Posted November 8, 2012 Any ground meats should be fine 7 weeks or more. They are all soft and easy to eat. Both beef and pork are tougher meats and may be hard to digest. I am just over 8 weeks and am afraid to eat beef, thought of maybe cooking it in the slow cooker.
hollirrose 249 Posted November 10, 2012 All meats are ok for me. I dont have a hard time with pork or steak... Briskett doesnt feel right so I dont eat it. I tend to eat more chicken then anything only because my calorie goal is 600 per day. Less calories and more prot with chicken.
Butterthebean 8,146 Posted November 10, 2012 Don't forget, they did surgery on your stomach, not your teeth. Chew chew chew. Even steak can be purreed by your chompers.
