The catheter wasn't a big deal for me and came out minutes after I woke up... To be honest I'd had a very bad experience with a vasectomy a year earlier that was infinitely worse than any catheter (the urologist failed to get me numb, not pleasant at all).

Sweet lord. The entire Man Room just shuddered.

In my vasectomy, the doctor and I discovered a common interest in fighter planes, and I was treated to a show with his hands demonstrating an airshow routine he saw recently. He was holding sharp objects at the time.

Guys,

I work for a medical device manufacturing company and we make a male external catheter. I'm going to ask my surgeon if they can use that one for me. It's worth asking!! Male external catheter goes on like a condom.(much better than the alternative)

I was thinking about about this issue once I got word I was approved for my surgery. After reading all of your comments I feel much better about the situation.

I just had my catheter pulled out. Believe me, it's not a big deal, and so nice to not have to move to pee.

Had my surgery last week. Didn't even know I had the catheter until I woke up in my room and had to pee. The nurse said go ahead you catheter's in. After it was removed, I sort of missed it. It was cool not having to get up to use it! LOL!

Oh crap, I didn't even think about getting one put in, but hopefully I won't have to endure it. I saw my Dad put them in and take them out during his last few weeks due to cancer, but never thought about me having to use one, ha.

I was seriously worried about it, but truly, it was no big deal. They put it in when you're under, and as someone mentioned, once you're awake, it's actually a bit of a relief not to have to get up and pee the first day. I had zero problems with pain or discomfort from it.

Why do men have to have a catheter? Can't you guys just get up and pee in the toilet like we women have to?

I think it's the surgeons preference. Even the woman got catheters after surgery in my hospital. Something about the anaesthesia

No, actually. I could not "go" normally until day 3 after surgery. All that anesthesia and pain med put my ability to just stand over the toilet to sleep. The nurse had no choice to put on in me by day 2 after all that IV Fluid. I gained about 20 lb in the hospital from the liquids after 5 days being there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
