How does "feeling full" feel once banded?

Recommended Posts

I'm not banded yet so I'm wondering if feeling fullness feels the same after banding? I never feel full unless I've eaten massive amounts of food and then I just feel sort of sick and not able to eat another bite. Will this be the same after banding?

I'm worried that if I don't recognize the signs of fullness pre-band, how will I recognize them with the band?

I do realize I'll probably start PBing or something if miss the fullness signs - I just want to know that I'll recognize the warning signs before I ever get to that stage.

Everyone has their "soft stop" signal that tells them it's time to stop or you'll find yourself uncomfortable (or worse). For some it's a hiccup or a runny nose or just a deep sigh. If you continue to eat after a "soft stop" you will come to a "hard stop" which is commonly described as a "golf ball sensation" or even a PB. It's painful and unpleasant.

The key is to eat slowly and be consciously aware of how you're feeling. Everyone feels differently. You simply don't feel hungry anymore. You feel "satisfied" and you don't feel that deep desire to clean the food that remains on your plate. I can honestly say I'm a reformed "clean your plate syndrome" sufferer.

For me, I feel the same sensation of "full" that I felt before only I feel it sooner and I NEVER get that feeling that I ate the whole Thanksgiving turkey. But that's me. Again, everyone's different in how they perceive sensations. You'll learn for yourself, it takes time to learn the language of your own band.

I got banded in Feb 2010, have had 2 filling and am at 7cc. I dont feel that fullness feeling and am able to eat about the same amounts as before surgery. The main thing that I feel is if I eat too quickly and eat certain foods, I get food stuck going down to my stomach and that feeling is horrible but I try to slow down now when eating.

When will I feel that fullness feeling in order not to overeat and lose more?

As an "old timer" feeling full banded feels the same as feeling full non-banded. You will have to slow down your eating to recognize the subtle cues that you are satisfied. For me, my nose begins to run. Others, it may be as subtle as a sigh. If you continue to eat after these signs of satisfaction into being full, I'm talking Thanksgiving Day full, you will experience an unpleasant situation. That could be anything from sliming, pain to a PB.

Note: If you are feeling things moving through your chest or getting "stuck", you are either too tight or you are eating too much, too quickly.

When I'm full, I know I've eaten too much. If I feel satisfied, I know I've eaten the right amount. Also, I know when to stop when I feel like I have to do a big sign. I've gone past the point before, and it doesn't feel good.

I will say it did take a couple of fill for me to even fill like I had the band in place. But once they put me at 7cc I do now get the full feeling.....I think I need at least one more fill before I hit the sweet spot.

I've just recently had my first fill, but I believe there is a huge difference for me between "full" and "satisfied." Satisfied is when any hunger pain or discomfort is gone and I eat very slowly to find that feeling. If I get to a full feeling, it is uncomfortable. I feel bloated, slowed down, and of course the feeling of restriction due to the band. According to my surgeon, the key is to learn to stop eating when you are simply "satisfied." It has helped me to count my calories and look at the amount of food I am eating for each meal. I usually feel good with about 1 cup or sometimes 1 1/2 cups of food.

Hope that helps some. Good luck!

For me feeling full now is NOTHING like pre-banded - I feel almost a preassure or tightness in my chest and I get the hiccups if I eat too much :smile2: I have never felt that really satisfying full feeling I use to get.. which is ok 91 pounds down at my not quite year mark  12 pounds to go to GOAL - I don't miss that full feeling one bit!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
