Eating On Workout Days

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

Ok I need a little guidance with this. I am doing the gym 3-4 days a week and I love it so far. 2 days are cardio and 2 are strength...each session 60 minutes. Today during my strength training I got dizzy at around minute 35 or so and I just struggled overall to get through the class.

I know it's likely I had too much time between a meal/snack and the class but I struggle on what to have before working out that isn't too heavy (makes me nauseous especially dairy) but will help me get through the workout. I make sure to have lean Protein or a shake immediately after the session for recovery. I'm drinking at least 32 oz of Water while exercising too...so that isn't the issue (i don't think).

How are you eating on workout days? Or do you not change your routine? When I asked my NUT she said I didn't need to change my routine. Erm...ok...my body disagrees. LOL

Thoughts?

Try drinking a Protein Drink 30 minutes before workingout and a light meal. That helps me. I use the whey Protein drink mix. Still drink a protein drink afterwards too.

I like to do a few apple slices with Peanut Butter or cottage cheese with mixed fruit. I get some Protein and some healthy fat and carbs.

Thanks, I'll have to see if an additional Protein shake will fit into my calories of the day. I usually drink 8 oz first thing in the morning or on the weekends save it for after my workout. I could split it in half, though. Hmmm....

Oh, this would be simple too! Are you able to eat the apple slices with the skin?

You don't necessarily have to try to increase your calories. It's more about the timing of meals. Most experts recommend some carbs before working out, and Protein right after. The carbs fuel your workout and e protein helps your muscles recover, and prevents your body from going into a catabolic state.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
